This is the Leg Exercise Tom Holland Loves to Hate
Like any self-respecting Spider-Man,Tom Holland is no stranger to physical challenges. But there’s one exercise that really tests his resolve: the Bulgarian split squat. In MH's recent interview with the 28-year-old, Holland described it as the one exercise he ‘loves to hate’.
And for anyone who’s attempted Bulgarian split squats, you'll know why. The movement involves placing one foot behind you on a bench or elevated surface while performing a deep squat with the other leg. The quads, hamstrings, and glutes are all primary targets, but your core is also called into action for stability.
Why Tom Holland Hates Bulgarian Split Squats – and Why You Should Do Them Anyway
Holland’s intense physical prep has been well-documented, including this mammoth 1,500-rep bodyweight workout. While he’s known for embracing the physicality of his roles, including stunt work and fight choreography, it’s reassuring to know that even Spider-Man finds Bulgarian split squats challenging. And that’s exactly why they’re so effective.
This single-leg movement exposes muscle imbalances and builds unilateral strength. For an actor like Holland, who often performs his own stunts, having a powerful and stable base – in the form of strong legs capable of withstanding impacting and producing force – is essential.
Here's How to Do the Bulgarian Split Squat
Stand two to three feet in front of a bench (depending on your height), facing away. Have one leg resting on the bench behind you, laces down, with your feet in line with your hips. Sink your body down until the knee of your back leg almost touches the floor. The front knee should be at a right angle. Push up through your front foot to return to the start position.
