2024 has been quite the year for celestial happenings. Earlier this year, much of the country experienced a solar eclipse, either partially or totally, and brands like SunChips and Oreo jumped at the opportunity to create special snacks for the event. Comet Tsuchinshan-Atlas, last visible from Earth 80,000 years ago, can now be seen with the naked eye for the next week or so if you know when and where to look. It won’t be seen for another 80,000 years.

Last week, much of the East Coast got an unexpected rare glimpse of the Northern Lights, and this week, the entire country can bask in the glow of the Hunter’s Supermoon. It’s the biggest supermoon—which occurs when there’s a full moon at the same time the moon’s orbit is closest to Earth—of the year.

That’s a lot of opportunity in one year for Americans to dust off their binoculars. For the celestial events that we know are coming, there’s also a lot of opportunity for food brands to create special products.

With this in mind, Krispy Kreme, which baked up its own solar eclipse treat back in April—the aptly named Total Solar Eclipse Doughnut—has a special doughnut planned for the Hunter’s Supermoon.

Krispy Kreme’s Supermoon Super Doughnut won’t replace the current Ghostbusters Collection, which celebrates the 40th anniversary of one of the 1980s' most beloved films. Rather, it will be a one-day-only offering, sold on Oct. 17, designed to celebrate the moon at its fullest.

The unglazed doughnut will be filled with cookies & Kreme filling, dipped in yellow icing, and swirled with chocolate cookie pieces, giving the appearance of what a full moon looks like from Earth. You can purchase the doughnut individually or as a Supermoon Super Doughnuts specialty dozen of six Supermoon Super Doughnuts and six Original Glazed Doughnuts.

If the supermoon excites you, pull out your camera—or figure out how to use your phone’s camera night settings—grab some Supermoon Super Doughnuts, and enjoy the year’s largest appearing full moon while munching on a sweet treat. If the supermoon doesn’t excite you, just enjoy the sweet treat on its own.
