This weekend, Kim Kardashian and Kanye West confirmed the name they’ve selected for their fourth child and it’s equally as unique as the other Kardashian-West children.

Introducing, Psalm West.

In an Instagram post, the 38-year-old reality star shared a message Kanye had sent to their friends and family over Mother's Day, which included the first image of Psalm, who was born via surrogate on May 10.

"Beautiful Mother's Day," he wrote in the message. "With the arrival of our fourth child we are blessed beyond measure. We have everything we need."

Little Psalm joins big sisters North, Chicago and big brother Saint in having a moniker that’s a little out of the baby naming box.

What does the name ‘Psalm’ mean?

Psalm has biblical origins with "Psalm" meaning "song" in Hebrew.

There's also the "Book of Psalms," which is a section in the Bible.

Psalm is also a Middle English word from the Old English "psealm," the Latin "psalmus," and the Greek "psalmos" which translates literally as "twanging of a harp."

Apparently the name has been growing in popularity of late, with Babycenter placing it at the 2907th most popular name in 2019, up 748 places from the previous year.

According to People the choice is a reflection of the spiritual revival that the couple have been going through lately. "Every name has a meaning that is personal between Kanye and Kim and the child," a source told the publication.

"Psalm is a good reflection of where Kanye and Kim are spiritually."

The source added that Kim and Kanye spend lots of time deliberating about names for their offspring before agreeing on a choice: "Kanye would never just choose a name that Kim doesn't like, or vice versa," said the source. "The names are things that they mutually agree upon."

SJ explains that directly translated psalm means "twanging of a harp," or "to pluck, play a stringed musical instrument".

“We know Kanye has deep-seated beliefs on the power of music so perhaps his influence is at work here?”

But are we likely to be seeing a wave of little Psalms on the pre-school register?

“I think the name is beautiful but it's not one likely to be copied in playgrounds across the US or UK as it's a little too leftfield for most.

“We've already seen adults struggle to pronounce or spell it so it will remain an A-list name for a Hollywood baby and won't easily travel well! However for a power family like Kim and Kanye's, it's a perfect choice."

Fans react to the name

Following the name reveal fans were quick to take to social media to express their thoughts on the the pick with some more impressed with others.

“Psalm West. At least they didn't name the baby Deuteronomy,” one follower quipped.

While others expressed bemusement by the moniker: “I told myself I wouldn't be surprised when they announced the name and yet here I am baffled his name is Psalm.”
