With the year almost at its end, royal watchers are getting ready for Kate Middleton’s final appearance. After a “tough” 2024, which included undergoing and completing treatment for cancer, the Princess of Wales will step out for the last time this year with Prince William, her kids, and the rest of the royal family as they make their annual Christmas morning walk from Sandringham House to St. Mary Magdalene Church. While last year’s Christmas walk brought about a matching Wales family style moment, a royal fashion expert says that Kate Middleton’s Christmas Day appearance this year might draw inspiration from Princess Diana's sartorial playbook with a “vintage vibe.”

Since Kate and William skipped out on this year’s pre-Christmas lunch at Buckingham Palace, all eyes will be on the couple and their little family as they join other royals on Wednesday, December 25. Bethan Holt, The Telegraph’s fashion director, told People that it’ll be a major appearance for both fans and the royal family after such a monumental year.

“It’s going to be such a huge moment because the last time we saw her, before we knew anything about her health issues, was last Christmas," Holt shared, calling the Christmas Day walk "a bookend moment on a very difficult time."

With the increased attention she’s bound to get this year, the author of The Duchess of Cambridge: A Decade of Modern Style says that she’s forecasting a “bold and cheery” fashion choice–something more in line with the nostalgic, vintage-inspired styles that Kate has been gravitating towards in recent months.

Holt called out the change in Kate’s holiday style just over the past year, contrasting the modern and chic white trouser suit that the princess wore at her Together at Christmas carol service in 2023 versus the red Alexander McQueen coat dress that she paired with a go-to red tartan skirt and a black velvet bow this year.

While Kate memorably opted for a royal blue Alexander McQueen coat with a matching hat for Christmas Day last year, she’s been gravitating towards pieces that are “quite serious, very elegant in a country chic way.”

“It would be fun to see her continue with the nod to Diana, maybe in a tartan coat or in a really bright color,” Holt continued. “Something jolly, maybe something with a vintage vibe.” Considering how much Kate loves an upcycled style moment, it wouldn’t be surprising if the princess rewears a festive piece paired with some jewelry from Princess Diana or Queen Elizabeth for her upcoming Christmas appearance.
