Gavin and Stacey fans in disbelief after spotting massive blunder in Christmas finale
Gavin and Stacey viewers were left in disbelief after discovering Smithy’s full name during the highly-anticipated Christmas special. After five years of waiting, fans of the show were treated to a grand finale on Christmas Day that was bursting with hidden Easter eggs, twists and plenty of tears too.
But besides finding out the conclusion to Smithy and Nessa’s relationship, fans also discovered Smithy’s real name - though some have questioned whether it was a “big oversight” or a grand reveal. The reveal occurred when Nessa and Smith said their vows, with Smithy declaring his name as Neil Noel Edmund Smith.
However, over on Reddit, some viewers were left confused after noticing that his name is the exact same as his son’s. “I noticed that Smithy's full name at his wedding was revealed to be Neil Noel Edmund Smith. But that's supposed to be Neil, the Baby's name (named after Noel from Hear'Say and Smithy's grandad Edmund). Not criticising Ruth & James for what is an incredibly minor nitpick, more a realisation that I probably watch the show too much,” wrote one.

“Yeah, I noticed this and remembered that Noel comes from Noel from Hearsay, as Nessa’s friend. Ruth once said in an interview on Brydon’s podcast about contradictions (I think it was about whether Nessa could drive) that they just sometimes forget what they’ve put in or where it’s come from so, prob an oversight and maybe they just wanted to get in one last joke about Noel Edmonds,” commented another.
“That is a pretty big oversight to be fair - well spotted,” a third added, while others speculated the possible reasoning behind the name. “But the tradition in Smithy’s family is the son is named Neil too - so potentially Smithy could have the same names as his son,” explained one.
Ruth Jones, who plays the beloved Nessa and created Gavin and Stacey with James Corden, has previously admitted that she found a “glaring continuity error” in the 2019 Christmas special. “I watched the 2019 Christmas special the other night and I noticed a glaring continuity error,” she said on Magic Radio.
“You know Pam leaves the Christmas puddings behind and forgets to take them because they have been otherwise occupied and they are mortified?” She continued: “And Mick, being the calming force of the family, the voice of reason, says ‘it's okay, we can go to a shop, there'll be one open’. So they go to get them on the way to the pub. Then Bryn turns up and he's got the Morrisons bag with the Christmas puddings in, and I think there were nine of them for dinner.”
She added: “Then Jason arrives and he's stopped at the shop and he's picked up Christmas puddings as well. So the next morning, when they haven't got the Christmas puddings, one of them, and I can't remember who it is, says ‘have we left nine Christmas puddings in the pub?’ There's 18, there's double.”
