If you paid any attention to the recent SS18 Fashion Weeks, you may have seen one face pop up over and over again. 16-year-old Kaia Gerber completely took over the catwalks in New York, London, Paris and Milan.

The daughter of original supermodel, Cindy Crawford, and businessman Rande Gerber, the teenager is the freshest face on the fashion block. And she’s killing it.

Her breakthrough season

She made her catwalk debut for Raf Simons’ second collection for Calvin Klein, impressing in front of the New York Fashion Week crowd. Following that, Kaia hit the runway for Brooklyn party boy, Alexander Wang.

The 16-year-old then made her way to good old Blighty, making her London Fashion Week debut for Burberry alongside older brother, Presley.

Paris and Milan were a similar story with Kaia walking for every single major designer including Prada, Chanel, Fendi and Versace. The latter was a real special moment.

Donatella Versace celebrated her late brother Gianni’s print-tastic work by recruiting all the former supermodels. It was one of the first and potentially last times that a mother and daughter would walk the same show as Cindy Crawford and Kaia both strutted their stuff.

Her modelling history

Kaia may seem like a relatively new face but the young teen has been modelling for the past few years.

When she was just ten years old, the model offspring starred in a Young Versace campaign. Then came the cover of Pop magazine at the age of 14, followed by a Marc Jacobs beauty campaign at 15, and a joint Vogue Paris cover with her mum in April last year.

Shot by Mario Testino, the mother-daughter cover saw the pair twinning in black leather jackets and matching hoop earrings.

Kaia has beaten her mum’s track record; Cindy only landed her first cover at the tender age of 16.

Her famous friends

It helps that the teen star is also gathering her own posse of famous friends – just like her mother. Take a scroll through her Instagram (notice her 2.2 million followers) and you’ll see photos featuring the likes of Bella Hadid, Karlie Kloss and male supermodel Jordan Barrett.

Thanks to her breakout season, Kaia has been nominated for the Model of the Year award at the 2017 Fashion Awards. Up against the likes of the aforementioned Hadid sisters as well as diversity advocates Winnie Harlow and Adwoa Aboah, she is the youngest contender by far.

Her arrival on the fashion circuit is believed to have kickstarted a new generation of supermodels; ones that have the genes, social media following and star quality to back it up.

Her future

It’s only natural that people will think Kaia is on her pedestal thanks to her family name. But plenty of the designers she walked for in the past season are not followers of pop culture.

The likes of Miuccia Prada and Raf Simons rarely cast Insta-famous girls (no Kendall’s or Gigi’s have ever walked their shows).

“I don’t think Kaia is getting any of these opportunities because of her mother, [but] if she was a girl who walked off the street, she would’ve had a harder time because our business is not so accepting of really beautiful girls — and she’s really beautiful,” casting director James Scully admitted to WWD.

“And lots of people who normally wouldn’t use a girl like her, they’re all using her. To be quite honest, Raf [Simons] wouldn’t use her. Half the shows she’s done, those people wouldn’t use her if she was just a beautiful girl off the street. I think she’s groundbreaking — I hope she’s breaking ground.”

When December hits, we’ll see if the rest of the fashion industry thinks the same.
