After six long years away from our screens, it’s official - iconic BBC sitcom Gavin and Stacey is back for one night only, as the cast reunite this Christmas for the final ever episode. Announcing the news on social media, creators James Corden and Ruth Jones blindsided fans on Friday, when they shared s snap of the final script alongside the caption.

“Some news… It’s official!!! We have finished writing the last ever episode of Gavin and Stacey. See you on Christmas Day, BBC One. Love Ruth and James," they wrote.

The series, which is set between Billericay, Essex and Barry, South Wales follows the lives of couple Gavin and Stacey, (played by Mathew Horne and Joanna Page ) and their eccentric families as they navigate the journey from dating to marriage, finding jobs and even embarking on parenthood! Supported by an eccentric mix of friends and relatives in the form of Rob Brydon, Alison Steadman, Larry Lamb and Melanie Walters, the show garnered a strong following among fans, with many even sharing their enthusiasm about it’s return on social media.

Yet it wasn’t just regular viewers who were buzzing with anticipation, but a whole host of famous faces too, with many celebrities also taking to social media to express their elation over the show’s impending return.

The Voice judge Olly Murs didn’t hold back as he exclaimed: “Nah, I can’t wait 8 months!” Meanwhile Strictly Come Dancing ’s Amy Dowden simply commented: “Yessssssssssssssssss!”

This Morning presenter Sian Welby then echoed the sentiment as she screeched: “YESSSSSSSS OMGGGGG!” Capital radio host Jordan North also had the same idea, as he commented: “OMG!”

Love Island’ s Liam Reardon seemed equally impressed by the announcement, but did make his own request of the show writing: “I’m hoping the episode is going to be at least 6 hours long, anything less than that & I will be upset.”

The show's lead Mathew Horne later shared the same photo alongside the words “Happy Christmas.”

Although the Christmas plot line remains a closely guarded secret, many fans are hoping that the show will finally address the massive cliff-hanger that occurred at the end of the last Christmas special back in 2019.

As regular viewers may recall, Stacey’s best friend Nessa, played by Ruth Jones had finally admitted her true feelings for James Corden’s character Smithy after three years of will-they-won’t-they drama. Keen to spend the rest of her life with him, the proud Welsh woman then got down on one knee and popped the all important question, but the episode ended before any answer could be given!

Could the pair finally get the happy ending they deserve? Fans will have to tune in this Christmas to find out.
