Nowadays, asking your girlfriend’s father for her hand in marriage before your engagement is… a little old-fashioned.

But the father of Allison Barron, a woman from Nevada in the US, clearly didn’t feel that way after he responded to her engagement in a hilarious fashion.

Levi Bliss, Barron’s now fiancé, popped the question up in the local countryside.

Barron said she started crying when Bliss went down on one knee, but immediately cracked up when she spotted her dad on a nearby hill.

He was holding a sign that said “SAY NO”.

So – as well as some perfect engagement photos – there are snaps of her dad’s protest too.

But don’t worry; yes, he was joking, and the prank went down pretty well.

“We both know my dad so well, we got the joke right away and found it funny,” Barron told Buzzfeed.

She explained that her fiancé and her father, Jake Barron, are “very close”:

“We have gone on many trips all together and they have hung out just the two of them before too, playing tennis, riding dirt bikes, and other activities,” she said.

She added: “This is really just my dad’s personality.”

Barron decided to share it on Twitter, but couldn’t have been prepared for what a hit it’d be.

A tweet of the photos along with the note “my dad had other ideas…”, has received more than 60,000 retweets and 200,000 likes.

It’s also inspired other Twitter users to respond with dad-like jokes of their own, and Jake has himself been turned into a bit of a meme.

Plenty of people have also said this is exactly what their own dads would do.

So, if this is just his response to the proposal, what will Barron’s dad’s wedding speech will be like?
