Serious helicopter crash with husband
BBC television presenters Mike Smith and Sarah Greene were seriously injured in a helicopter crash in Gloucestershire in 1988.
Miss Greene broke both her legs and an arm when the helicopter her partner was piloting smashed into trees close to where he was attempting to land. Mike claimed the aircraft - a Robinson R22 Beta helicopter - lost power.
Mr Smith - who bought the two-seater craft after learning to fly in February - suffered a broken back and ankle.
They were taken to hospital and discharged after four weeks, and Sarah returned to her co-host Going Live! alongside Phillip Schofield with her legs still in plaster.
Just weeks after the almost fatal crash, Mike proposed to Sarah. The radio and TV star was cleared of any blame in the accident by the Air Accidents Investigation Branch, who concluded there was no fault with the helicopter.
Relationship with Mike Smith
Sarah Greene sparked a relationship with Radio Breakfast Show star and Top of the Pops presenter Mike Smith in the 1980s. In 1989, a year after their serious crash, the pair got married and lived together in London.
The former Top Of The Pops presenter passed away aged just 59 due to complications after undergoing major heart surgery on August 1, 2014.
Mike enjoyed a successful career as a TV and radio presenter. He was known for his appearances on BBC One as a co-host of Breakfast Time and the music show Top of the Pops.
He was one of the BBC's main presenters at Live Aid in 1985, and also fronted TV shows for Comic Relief. Mike's other TV credits include Noel Edmonds' The Late, Late Breakfast Show, and That's Showbusiness.
Mike, who was a qualified helicopter pilot, founded his own company, Flying TV in 2004 to provide aerial filming services to broadcasters. Sarah is also a director of the company.
Sarah Greene's new love following death of husband
In 2022, Sarah revealed she was dating one of her late husband's oldest friends, British retired racing driver and team owner Robb Gravett.
The presenter said her late husband played a huge part in their getting their relationship started.
"I sort of know Mike is pulling so many strings in my life," Sarah said on the My Time Capsule podcast. "He has undoubtedly been responsible for me meeting my beloved who was one of his oldest friends, who waited a certain amount of time but did keep leaving messages on the answering machine. I thought he was just being kind."
She went on to explain how she soon received a message telling her: "Then I got a message almost saying 'For God's sake, Greeno, Robb is trying to make contact with you because he actually wants to take you out, not because he's kind. So will you just get off your arse and go and answer the phone next time it rings!'"
Sarah finally contacted him and a 'whole new conversation started'. She said: "I'm sure, and Robb is very sure too because it's a very strange situation."
At first, the presenter was 'terribly worried' and asked Robb whether he thought it was strange going 'into the house and seeing all these pictures everywhere of Mike.'
