'I'm a fashion editor and this is the trending jumper you need – trust me'
Just like a perfectly fitting T-shirt in summer, the right jumper in winter is a quintessential wardrobe classic worth investing time and money in. Once found, they make getting dressed a whole lot more enjoyable year after year (so long as the moths don't take a fancy to them). However, like many people, my usual go-to knitwear is primarily in the realm of the not exactly boat-rocking world of neutral oatmeal, ecru, navy and grey.
This somewhat limited colour palette usually does the job, and up until now, has never left me with a yearning desire to venture out into something brighter. However, the catwalk's (and now the high street's) whole-hearted embrace of red in a spectrum of shades (cherry, burgundy, tomato), is something akin to the Barbie pink craze a few seasons ago, and can't be ignored any longer. While trends should be taken with a pick’ n’ mix approach (like candy, you only want to select a few favourites, otherwise they'll leave you feeling a bit sick), there’s something about this one that is giving me a sugar rush. It feels fresh, new and unexpected, but at the same time completely accessible and wearable in everyday life.
For one thing, red makes for a surprisingly versatile colour; glossy burgundy sling-backs, bags and nail varnish have been subtly accessorising my outfits since autumn started. This time though, it's a fiery shade of red that's causing me to fill my hypothetical shopping basket, working as a touch of mood-lifting vibrancy on dark days.
Throwing red into the mix with monochrome is where it truly shines, helping to shake off the corporate edge that often comes with solely wearing grey, black and white. Opt for a pair of grey wool trousers and a flash of white T-shirt poking out at the neckline of a tomato red crew neck knit. Or, use it to break up top-to-toe black by having it nonchalantly slung shoulders or tied around the waist.
With party season on the horizon, a vibrant red knit with a disco-style silver sequin skirt or red velvet trousers are both examples of a high-low mix done at its finest, ideal for playing host at home this year, or for lowkey drinks with friends.
Scarlet red naturally feels like a sporty colour, so my favourite way to wear it is in the form of a V-neck or slogan jumper with wide-leg denim jeans, complete with a boxy blazer or duster coat and finished off with baseball cap as a way of embracing the varsity whilst still feeling polished.
