This Idyllic Hudson Valley Cottage, Listed for $2.35 Million, Dates Back to the 1680s
New York’s Hudson Valley, which stretches from just north of New York City to Albany along the Hudson River, is known for its bucolic countryside, laid-back lifestyle, and well-preserved historic homes, some dating back centuries.
Rare is it, however, that a pristine, renovated home dating back to the 1680s comes to market, especially one brimming with history like this recently listed property in the wee hamlet of Hurley in the Town of Hurley. Located at 515 Hurley Avenue and listed for $2.35 million, the Georgian-style stone house was first built in 1688. According to Jim Decker, the Town of Hurley’s historian, the present kitchen area occupies the original building, which was a one-room cottage that was burned by British troops, part of General John Vaughn’s army, during the Revolutionary War on October 16, 1777. It was rebuilt by the same family, and some decades later, in the early 1800s, a two-story Georgian structure was added.

While the home retains many original details that anchor it in time, it has been fully reimagined for a modern lifestyle. The exterior features black accents on the windows, doors, and roof. A recently added two-story structure attached to the original stone cottage is also painted a dramatic black, as is the detached two-car garage. The dark, moody exterior gives way to bright, stark-white interior spaces, an unexpected juxtaposition that adds to the home’s stylish allure.
Set on just over 12 acres, the 3,569-square-foot home has five bedrooms and two bathrooms set over two floors. Most of the home’s floors and walls are painted white, as are the original wood beams and fireplaces. There are double parlors, both with high ceilings and oversized windows, one with a wood-burning fireplace.
The kitchen is a cook’s delight with high-end appliances, including a Wolf gas range, Sub-Zero fridge, and wine fridge. It also features custom cabinetry, a large central island, and, perhaps best of all, radiant-heated floors. Though little is evident from the original 18th-century cottage, the kitchen is connected to its past life with exposed stone added in the 1804 rebuild. A spiral staircase leads from the kitchen to a lofted area above. The main floor also features a dining room with vaulted ceilings, a full bathroom, and a bedroom currently being used as an office.
Upstairs, there are four spacious, light-filled bedrooms and one full bathroom. The primary bedroom does not currently have a private bath, but it does offer ample storage space and two large windows overlooking the verdant grounds. There’s also a bright, walk-out basement that can be converted into a gym or wine cellar.
Outside is a landscaped patio that includes dining and barbecue areas, as well as a saltwater pool. There’s a studio space above the detached garage.
