Huggies launch the world's smallest nappy to cater for super premature babies
Aside from the fact that they’re going to get through a fair few of them, new parents often don’t give a second thought to the size of a newborn nappy. But nappy-sizing can have a big effect on the comfort and leak-potential of shiny new babies, particularly if your little one is born prematurely.
That’s why Huggies are releasing a line of nappies that are specially designed for super premature babies weighing less than a teeny two pounds.
The new Huggies Little Snugglers Nano Preemie Diapers have been specially designed to protect the fragile skin of premature babies, while also helping to encourage healthy growth and development.
The World Health Organisation reports that around 15 million babies are born prematurely every year. And while only 1.4% of infants born earlier weigh less than 2 lbs, Huggies believe those particularly fragile babies weren’t being catered for in the nappy department.
Huggies worked closely with NICU nurses and neonatal therapists to develop the first-of-it’s-kind nappy, which offers the tiniest of babies gentle, specially-sized fasteners, a narrow absorbent pad and super soft materials to prevent any irritation of their delicate, underdeveloped skin.
Eleanora Daireaux, Vice President of Huggies told Pr NewsWire: “We’re passionate about helping all babies thrive, especially the smallest and most fragile. This Huggies diaper reflects our ongoing commitment to deliver innovative solutions for the NICU.”
“After hearing of the need for a diaper that meets the special requirements of these babies, our expert teams in skin science, research, product safety and manufacturing were inspired,” she continued.
“Knowing every second counts for these babies, the team acted quickly to bring Huggies Little Snugglers Nano Preemie Diapers from concept to launch in hospitals in just six months.”
This isn’t the first time the nappy brand has made preemie babies their focus. Last year Huggies launched the “No Baby Unhugged” initiative, a cuddling programme for preemies that pairs NICU babies with volunteers who can hold them when their parents are unable to.
Sadly the special preemie nappies are only available in the US right now, but hopefully the brand will roll them out to the UK and other nations soon.
In the meantime we’re giving props to Huggies for taking care of the tiniest of the species and keeping our fingers crossed that other nappy brands also jump on board soon.
