In TV shows and films, prisoners talk to somebody on a telephone, separated by strengthened glass. I don't know if this is how it works in real life, but conversations are monitored. If one veers into inappropriate territory, it's made clear, or the call is terminated. You might find a conversation to be similarly restrictive.
