Here's what you need to know about the 'Suits' reboot
The Suits reunion at the Golden Globes wasn't just the original cast fancying a glitzy get-togethe; it was actually whetting audience appetites for the hotly anticipated return of everyone's favourite legal drama. That's right: there's a Suits reboot on the works.
Suits creator Aaron Korsh previously teased last year that he was developing a spin-off away from the world of Pearson Hardman - and now, we officially have a title - Suits: LA.
News of the new series comes after the original drama, which ended in 2019 after nine seasons, has enjoyed a resurgence of late. Shortly after it was re-released on Netflix in June, the series broke the Nielsen streaming record for acquired programming, netting a whopping 3.1 billion viewing minutes during its first week.
"It’s an amazing thing," Gabriel Macht, who plays Harvey Specter, said of the viewing spike. "We had some great success when the show was on. All over the world there were people pirating, downloading it. At a certain point, Netflix came in and said, 'Why don’t we put this out there.' And it’s just gotten incredible eyes. We’re very grateful for it."
Here's what we know about the new series so far...
What will the reboot be about?
In early 2024, it was revealed that the Suits spin-off will be set in LA and feature a whole new cast. In late November 2023, Beatrice Springborn, president of Universal International Studios, promised that the show will "have the same energy and good looking people that the original did". She added that Suits: LA is "so fun and happy".
The series will follow Ted Black, a former federal prosecutor from New York, who has reinvented himself representing the most powerful clients in Los Angeles. "His firm is at a crisis point, and in order to survive he must embrace a role he held in contempt his entire career," reads the official logline. "Ted is surrounded by a stellar group of characters who test their loyalties to both Ted and each other while they can’t help but mix their personal and professional lives. All of this is going on while events from years ago slowly unravel that led Ted to leave behind everything and everyone he loved."
Who's behind it?
While the original was predominantly shot in Toronto, the new show will be filmed in Vancouver, with the pilot having been filmed in April this year. The new series will be helmed by original Suits creator Aaron Korsh. In addition to writing the pilot, Korsh will executive produce alongside former Suits EPs David Bartis, Doug Liman and Gene Klein. Victoria Mahoney has also been tapped to direct the pilot.
Who's starring in it?
The lead role of Ted Black will be taken on by Stephen Amell, a Canadian actor best known for appearing in superhero TV series The Arrow and The Flash. Amell also played a small role in The Vampire Diaries."I’m really excited, and I’ve also really been enjoying the show. I hadn’t seen the original, and I’m familiarising myself because I think certain shows, they’ll have a syntax to them," he said in an interview with Deadline. "But big fan, and just glad I get to be a part of the world."
Amell will be joined by Troy Winbush as Kevin, "Ted Black's old friend and ex-partner who is a former FBI agent and now a private detective", Josh McDermitt as Stuart Lane, Black's old friend with whom he launches a law firm, and Lex Scott Davis as Erica Rollins, "a savvy and strong-willed rising star" in the legal world. It's unlikely any of the old cast members – including Patrick J. Adams and Meghan Markle – will return, though Adams joked about it at the Golden Globes.
Markle sparked rumours of an on-screen comeback when she signed to the WME talent agency. While she had a small role in an advert for coffee company Clevr last year, the 41-year-old has yet to confirm any new roles.
When will it air?
The show doesn’t have an official release date yet. The spinoff has long been eyed for the 2024-2025 season, however, broadcaster NBC did not announce Suits: LA for their upcoming Autumn schedule. While nothing has been confirmed, a 2025-2026 window now looks more promising. A UK distributor is also yet to be announced.
