Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will release a new photo of their son Archie to mark his first birthday.

A spokesman confirmed that the duke and duchess will share a picture of their son, who is rarely seen in public, to mark his big day on 6 May.

“You can expect to see him,” a spokesman told The Sunday Times.

However it’s not clear how the picture could be released because the couple has mothballed the Sussex Royal Instagram as they have agreed not to use the word ‘royal’ in any jurisdiction.

They have also cut ties with several UK tabloids, saying they will no longer co-operate with them.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have some favoured media titles, and could decide to release the image to one or several of those.

Archie is not often seen in public as his parents have wanted to keep him out of the media eye. He accompanied them on their royal tour to South Africa at the end of 2019, and they shared a picture of him at Christmas.

They also shared a picture of Harry, 35, holding him at the end of a video of images over the New Year.

Sharing a new photo is a traditional way to mark a birthday for royals.

Last week fans were treated to five new pictures of Prince Louis from his parents, Prince William and Kate, and an extra one of him with his grandfather, Prince Charles.

It’s expected there will be new photos of Princess Charlotte to mark her fifth birthday on 2 May.

Archie and his parents are now living in the US after spending some time in Canada as they stepped back from working as senior members of the Royal Family.

They arrived in California as the USA went into lockdown, with the state issuing stay at home orders to millions of households.

Like his great-grandmother, the Queen, and his older cousin, Louis, Archie will have to spend his birthday in lockdown.

Video calls could be on the cards, as the couple included the little one on a call to the Queen to mark her 94th birthday.
