Whether you’re a no-knickers in bed kinda gal, or you like to go commando just for the thrill of it, one gynaecologist has put a case forward for going pant-free way more often.

Donnica Moore, gynaecologist and president of Sapphire Women’s Health Group, told Health.com that as well as avoiding the dreaded VPL, going commando can be beneficial for our health too.

“It’s not good to always have the lady parts locked up,” she said. “They need air like all other parts of your body.”

She goes on to explain that continuously covering your crotch makes it easier for heat and sweat to build up, which increases your risk of yeast infection.

And that risk increases further still if your knickers of choice happen to be fancy pants made from lace or other non-breathable material, which can irritate delicate vaginal skin, potentially leading to rashes and allergic reactions.

Commando it is! [Photo:<a href="https://www.pexels.com/u/annaelk/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" data-ylk="slk:Adrianna Calvo;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas" class="link ">Adrianna Calvo</a> via Pexels]

While living a knicker-free life might be better for your bits health-wise, Moore does acknowledge that there is one potential risk of ditching your smalls. “You run the risk of irritation and chafing when you wear garments not meant to come into contact with your vulva,” she explains.

Like jeans, for example. Apparently, donning denim and other irritating fabrics without underwear “can lead to very small nicks in the skin that act as portals for bacteria.”

However, she believes the benefits of being pant-free outweigh the downsides.

Still not sure if living a knicker-less life is for you? Why not try ditching your smalls in bed first and see how you go?

And if you’re still not ready to throw away your entire underwear draw, start by tossing your black pants first. Because, apparently the colour of your knickers can have a very real effect on your mood.
