Gwyneth Paltrow's guide to New York
The best time to go to New York is in the fall, before it’s too cold. I like to visit when there’s a good exhibition on at the Met, the Guggenheim or the Whitney.
I love to walk from museum to restaurant around Manhattan. It’s my favourite way to see how the city is evolving.
My daughter Apple and I always come before Thanksgiving. Our annual shopping trip to Bergdorf Goodman is really fun.
I grew up on the Upper East Side– it’s old-world New York. The Carlyle feels like my home from home. It’s so elegant and such a nice group of people work there; and Bemelmans Bar is a vibe.
The Polo Bar at Ralph Lauren is a great place for a drink – I love a vodka martini.
4 Charles is a little hole-in-the-wall place in the West Village; it’s an amazing steakhouse with incredible cocktails. I had a fun birthday dinner there with some of my best friends and my husband.
My two great Italian ‘in the know’ spots are Elio’s on 84th Street and Ballato’s.
I like to be chic but comfortable. I’ll pack long trousers and layers – the fall can be quite warm in the day and chilly at night. I wear trainers that aren’t too beaten up, because you want them to be nice enough that you can walk into a restaurant. A pair of white, chunky JW Anderson high-tops is my go-to – they work with everything.
The Botanical Garden in the Bronx is really special, and not at all touristy.
I take my unlined Smythson notebook in my purse to jot down notes or thoughts, and because of all the walking I bring a bottle of water with electrolytes in it. I also practise eyes-open meditation using the Moments of Space app while strolling down a busy street.
I’m pretty minimalist with my make-up– I apply sunscreen, lip balm and a little mascara. Goop also makes Colorblur Glow Balms for cheeks that are just exactly my speed for no-make-up make-up.
The Moments of Space app with Gwyneth Paltrow is available to download from app stores now.
