Great Outfits in Fashion History: Liza Minnelli's 1982 Beaded Fringe Set

There are perfectly good celebrity style moments, and then there are the looks that really stick with you, the ones you try desperately to recreate at home. In 'Great Outfits in Fashion History,' Fashionista editors are revisiting their all-time favorite lewks.

Nowadays, "nepo" babies are all the rage — but the near-daily pop-culture discourse wouldn't exist without one of the OG nepotism beneficiaries on the stage and screen: Liza Minnelli.

The daughter of actor Judy Garland and director Vincente Minnelli became a massive star in her own right, singing on her mother's talk show, winning a Tony at 19 and an Oscar at 27. Minnelli's never not been a spectacle, both in her performance style and her actual style. See: her participation in the "Night of 100 Stars" television special and fundraiser in 1982, where she matched her outfit to her sparkling talent.

Minelli bounced around dancing and climbed on and off a piano in a glittering fringe tunic tank and matching pants, each string of beads dazzling in the spotlight, making her fashion just as effervescent as her stage presence. She styled the ensemble with a skinny white scarf draped around her neck and metallic criss-cross sandals. Though unconfirmed, the look was more than likely custom Halston — the two were incredibly close friends, and the designer had shown two similar fringe looks in his Resort 1982 collection.
