More women die of heart disease than any other condition — experts want you to wear red to raise awareness
Grab these leggings, tanks, jackets and dresses to show support for survivors and increase awareness for women's heart health.
While heart disease doesn't always get the same level of attention as other women's health conditions, like breast or cervical cancer, it's the leading cause of death in women across most demographics. In fact, according to the recently released 2025 Heart Disease & Stroke Statistical Update fro the American Heart Association (AHA), 45% of all women over 20 years old have some form of cardiovascular disease, but only about half of women realize it's the No. 1 killer for women.
Even more to the point, an estimated 80% of all cardiovascular disease is preventable, but without increased awareness, early diagnosis and early treatment, lives continue to be lost too soon. In 2021, more than 310,000 women lost their lives to cardiovascular disease.
In a February 2025 press release, Nancy Brown, CEO of the AHA, shared, "Women still remain underdiagnosed and undertreated. At the American Heart Association, we are working to change the future of health."
The organization's nationwide, female-focused initiatives to increase heart disease awareness and resources are helping pave the way for better outcomes. In February, in conjunction with American Heart Month, the organization is spearheading major initiatives, including National Wear Red Day (the first Friday in February) and the Go Red for Women movement, which takes place throughout the month. These initiatives encourage women to pull out their favorite red gear and wear it proudly to help increase education and impact. "Go Red for Women is a powerful movement that connects women across the country to share information, motivation and inspiration. Together we can harness that support system to create better health outcomes for all women," Brown says.
Get involved with Go Red for Women
Here at Yahoo, we're adding red gear to our wardrobes and wearing it proudly while starting conversations with friends, family and our online audience about the importance of regular health screenings, engaging in heart-healthy behaviors and seeking early treatment. In addition to wearing red (we're sharing some of our favorite red picks below, including those that support AHA-sponsored research for women's heart disease), Brown points out that there are other ways to get involved this month. These include:
Wear red throughout the month of February. Share on social media using #WearRedAndGive, #HeartMonth and #GoRedforWomen.
Learn Life's Essential 8 for women. Women experience changes throughout life that can increase their risk of heart disease and stroke. Specifically, physical and hormonal changes that take place during pregnancy and menopause can significantly affect heart health. The American Heart Association’s Life’s Essential 8 are measures all women should be aware of for improving and maintaining cardiovascular health throughout their lives.
Celebrate survivors and communities championing women's health. If you know a woman who has survived a heart attack or stroke, share and celebrate her story to help increase awareness.
Learn CPR. The American Heart Association is urging every American family to learn CPR to protect the ones they love most.
Make a donation to support women's heart health research. Every dollar counts. In addition to online donations through the AHA website, you can shop official Go Red gear on the ShopHeart store, or you can make a donation at your local CVS; throughout February, shoppers have the option to add a donation during checkout, or you can donate online.
Get screened and know your numbers. There's no time like the present to schedule an appointment with your doctor and brush up on the numbers that may indicate whether you're at risk for cardiovascular disease. Total cholesterol, HDL (good) cholesterol, blood pressure, blood sugar and body mass index can help paint a picture of your current heart health and help you and your care provider make proactive decisions to keep your heart healthy.
Go Red: Grab the best gear to show your support
If your closet is already rife with red, there's certainly no need to go out and grab something new. But if you're in the mood to spice things up, here are the red items we're loving this February (we also love that they do double-duty for Valentine's Day).
Have your red dress moment
The American Heart Association hosts an annual Red Dress Collection Concert to help raise awareness and funds for women's heart health research. While you may not be able to attend the event, you can always buy a beautiful red dress to show your support.
Lilly Pulitzer UPF 50+ Eleni Dress ($168): We love the casual and comfortable cut of this dress, which makes it ideal for daily wear. Plus, the UPF 50+ protection from the sun helps keep your skin safe from UV rays, too.
Anthropologie The Tommy Cap-Sleeve Smocked Front-Zip Shirt Dress ($170-$178): For a dress that walks the line between work-appropriate and date-night attire, you can wear this dress for practically any occasion.
Aquari Calypso Dress ($125): When you feel like channeling a Boho vibe, Aquari's Calypso dress does the job. And if you're taking a beach vacation? It works just as well as a casual dress for walking the boardwalk as it does for a laid-back beachside dinner.
Anthropologie Endless Rose Sleeveless Textured Midi Dress ($185-$195): Take things up a notch with this textured midi dress — it's a classic option you'll wear for years. Plus, you can easily dress it up or down.
Anne Klein A-Line Wrap Dress: An A-line wrap dress is one of the most universally flattering options you can buy. This Anne Klein version is ideal for date nights. Just be aware it's not made for taller frames.
Enjoy a casual day in red
Consider this your "rich mom look: red edition." Whether you're picking your kids up from school, heading to a PTA meeting or enjoying brunch with friends, these red picks are both chic and comfortable.
IBKUL Solid Popcorn Stitch Asymmetrical Zip Pullover ($108): We love this asymmetrical pullover for its functional details — the thumbhole at the arms, the zippered side pockets and the mock neck that can be opened at the side if you prefer a more open neckline.
Lilly Pulitzer UPF 50+ 27" Riley Pant ($128): When you need a pair of pants that looks great and can also be worn to chase toddlers around a playground, it's hard to beat this pair from Lilly Pulitzer. Not only are the UPF 50+ to protect your skin from the sun's UV rays, but they're not too tight, not too loose, not too long, not too short. In the words of Goldilocks, they're "just right."
Levitate Fisherman Beanie ($34): Whether you're having a bad hair day or you just need a little protection from the cold, this beanie is the ideal accessory in a nice maroon color that pairs with practically everything.
Tusk Travel Portfolio ($128): When you don't feel like lugging a bigger bag around, this Travel Portfolio (in a super cute red and marine combo color) makes it easy to carry your necessities (cards, cash and phone). It's even designed to hold passports and boarding passes, and the handy wrist strap ensures you won't accidentally drop it.
Lilly Pulitzer Tensley Sweater ($148): It would be hard to find a more on-theme sweater than this red version with pink hearts. Sure, it says "Valentine's Day," but it also says "take care of your heart." There's even a matching version for girls.
Stock up on red basics
Sure, not everyone will see them, but you'll know they're there. These red undergarments will carry you through from morning to night.
Athleta Train Free Bra A-C ($49): When you know your day includes more strenuous exercise, you need a bra that can keep your boobs from bouncing. This Athleta Train Free bra does the trick, and the red color is one you'll want to show off (if that's your thing). There's also a version available for larger breasts.
Bloomers Tiara Lace Bralette ($62): For an undergarment that's just sexy enough, but is still comfortable for everyday wear, grab this lace bralette. It's also great for layering and showing a little pop of red under a sheer outfit.
Bloomers Her Highness Briefs ($38): Make it a matching set and pair your bralette with these universally flattering high-waisted briefs.
Main Squeeze Knee-High Compression Socks ($35): These socks are the perfect red color for Go Red month, but they offer high-quality compression that can also help with circulation. That's what we call a win-win.
Quinn Womens Everyday Bikini ($48, 2 pack): To prioritize your health in all areas, you may want to start choosing garments made from natural fibers. This set of two red briefs is died with natural plant dyes and made of 100% organic cotton.
Woxer Luxe Bralette Red Hot ($34): For casual days at work or light exercise, this Woxer bralette offers comfortable support, thanks to its adjustable straps, which help keep everything in place.
Don't forget your red accessories
No outfit is complete without the right accessories, and you can take your Go Red support to the next level by maxing out your fiery hues, and even painting your nails a fire-engine red.
Sunglass Hut Burberry Sunglasses ($417): These angular cat's-eye frames are universally flattering and are sure to turn heads. If you want a conversation starter to give you a reason to share about women's heart health, you're bound to get compliments on these shades.
Jones Road The Nail Polish Kit: This nail polish kit comes in a set with two polishes (Poppy red and Ballerina pink) and a 2-in-1 base and top coat.
Lululemon Lunar New Year Everywhere Belt Bag 1L ($48): Lululemon's classic belt bag in this siren-red shade is ideal for running errands and heading to the gym. We love that it can be worn multiple ways and is easily adjustable.
Sunglass Hut Ray-Ban Erika Disney's Minnie Mouse ($241): If the Burberry sunglasses are a little too out there for you, Ray-Ban's Erika Disney's Minnie Mouse shades may be the perfect alternative. The classic shape and red-and-gold frame are eye-catching without being excessive.
American Heart Association ShopHeart Dazzling Crystal Red Dress Brooch ($28): Share your Go Red support with a somewhat more subtle accessory from the American Heart Association. This brooch can be clipped to any shirt, bag or jacket (and your purchase helps raise funds to support heart research).
Burn up the courts in fiery shades
If you're a red-hot competitor on the courts or the links, you can't go wrong working up a sweat in these attractive, pickleball-friendly options.
Sierra Madre Ready Mock Neck Tank ($68) and Sierra Madre Ready Skort ($78): This may look like a dress, but it's really a tank and skort set. That means you can mix-and-match the two pieces with other gear in your tennis or golf arsenal. We love the skort's three pockets and elastic glove strap — and the built-in shorts, of course. The tank also has a built-in bra, and the mock-neck style is appropriate at any golf club, so you don't have to worry about wearing a collar.
Dona Jo Classic Skirt (Divino) ($30): For a more classic tennis skort, the Dona Jo Classic Skirt offers an easy fit with three cute pleats, built-in shorts with a pocket for your phone and UVB 50+ protection to help keep your skin safe from the sun while on the court or off.
Sierra Madre Ready Swing Dress ($108): This mini dress can be dressed up or down and works as well at the golf club as it does out with friends. It comes with a pair of detached shorts you can put on underneath, and between the dress and the shorts, you have access to four handy pockets. The dress also has a built-in shelf bra (although you might need to double up if you'll be exercising vigorously), and the sweat-wicking, stretchy fabric adds the right amount of comfort to this stylish pick.
Wear your red on the run
Will red-hot gear actually help you run faster? Maybe not. But you can harness your inner Flash with these eye-catching pieces.
Brooks Canopy Jacket ($130): If rain is in the forecast, or you just need a light layer, the Canopy Jacket provides a handy solution. This jacket packs down into a wearable backpack you can take with you. The fabric is 100% recycled and offers protection from the wind and rain.
Saucony Women's Kinvara Pro ($180): The Kinvara Pro is one of Saucony's most-loved styles, and these bright red kicks (there's a men's version, too) are an everyday trainer with a nice bouncy feel and enough forward roll to help you move seamlessly through your February miles and well beyond.
Brooks Ghost No Show ($15): Sure, most of the red will be covered, given the no-show nature of these run socks, but you'll know the heat is there. You'll also love the extra cushion and arch support they provide.
Brooks Chaser 3" Short 2.0 ($65): If you're looking for a new favorite pair of running shorts, the Chaser 3" Short 2.0 just might be it. They're short and airy enough to let your legs move with comfort, while the two built-in pockets (one for your phone and the other for keys and other necessities) help you to go hands-free as you burn up the miles.
Spanx SpanxShape Booty Boost Full Length Leggings ($98): Spanx may be known for shapewear, but it's making waves in activewear, too. These full-length leggings provide complete coverage (nothing see-through here!), four-way stretch fabric and a contoured waistband that is functional and flattering.
Lounge around in rosy hues
Your favorite sweatpants deserve an upgrade — upgrade your loungewear with gear you can comfortably wear out of the house, too.
Spanx AirEssentials Wide Leg Pant ($110): These wide-leg pants are the perfect loungewear option — they're comfortable, stretchy and easy to throw on or yank off ... but you can still pair them with dressier tops if you're inclined to take them on the go. We also love that they come in three different lengths — petite, regular and tall.
American Heart Association ShopHeart Chenille Go Red Slippers ($25): These slippers say it all. Literally. Plus, proceeds from the purchase go toward funding cardiac research.
Zoonai Satin Scrunchies ($7, set of 2): Go ahead and pull your hair into that messy bun. These satin scrunchies won't break or damage your hair, and they certainly complete the outfit.
Vontelle Fortitude Glasses ($199): Your down days are no time to mess with contacts. We love the head-turning color these Vontelle frames provide. You can order them as is or with a range of lenses: blue light, reader, single-vision, double-vision, progressive or polarized sunglasses.
Dona Jo Play Bra (Divino) ($25): If your lounge days still require a bra, you should at least choose one that's comfortable. This affordable bra offers moderate support, which means it's perfect both for time on the couch or for heading out to run errands.
Spanx AirEssentials Luxe Half Zip Tunic ($138): This half-zip tunic is a match made in heaven for Spanx's wide-leg pants. With a hip-covering length, a pass-through kangaroo pocket and long sleeves with a thumbhole, once you add this layer, you won't want to take it off.
Turn up the heat on your next sweat session
Whether you hit the gym to lift weights or to work on your eagle pose, there's hot red gear for that.
Lululemon Swiftly Tech Long-Sleeve Shirt 2.0 Hip Length ($78): This long-sleeved shirt is an ideal base layer that works for practically every activity. It's lightweight and breathable enough to wear at the gym or on a run. It moves with you, and the thumbholes help keep it in place.
Athleta Vital Built-in Bra Tank ($35): This tank top is sweat-wicking, breathable and offers enough stretch to move with you through every pose. It even includes a built-in bra that provides sufficient support for lower-intensity workouts.
Anne Klein Chevron Packable Puffer Jacket ($220): It's hard to find a solid jacket that offers enough warmth on chilly days but that can still fit easily in a gym locker. This (very attractive) puffer jacket from Anne Klein packs down into its own attached bag, making it a flexible and functional addition to your wardrobe, including your workout wardrobe.
Athleta Coaster Luxe Waffle High Rise Jogger ($65): These joggers provide comfort and style for recovery days at the gym — stretch, foam roll and enjoy a long walk on the treadmill.
Athleta Pranayama Restore Wrap ($45): This light layer is perfect for throwing on over your yoga gear before and after your workout. It's also attractive enough to wear out and about or while working from home.
It's never too early to dress them in red
Given that roughly 50% of women don't realize that heart disease is such a killer, it's evident that more education is needed. Consider getting the littlest ladies in your life (whether daughters, nieces or neighbors) involved in the Go Red movement. Here are a few fun items you might want to gift this month. It doesn't hurt that they're on-theme for Valentine's Day, too.
AHONEY 3 Pack Red Headbands ($8, set of 3): These classic headbands are the perfect, low-key accessory that can be paired with practically any outfit.
Lilly Pulitzer Girls Mini Tensley Sweater ($78): Do you have a mini-me? Get the matching mom-and-daughter Tensley sweaters from Lilly Pulitzer and show them off all month. They're available in sizes XS-XL for a range of ages.
Mudpie Heart T-Shirt Dress ($25): For the littlest girls, Mudpie's Heart T-Shirt Dress provides an adorable heart-centered focus, in sizes 12M-5T.
K KomForme Canvas Sneakers ($18): These classic red canvas sneakers come in toddler and little kid sizes. Pair them with jeans or a dress — you really can't go wrong.
Lohgou Mini Crossbody Shoulder Bag ($8): This strawberry bag provides a pop of color, so it isn't necessary to don red from head to toe.
Everswe Girls Tights ($6): Many girls love throwing a pair of tights on under a skirt or dress; they make it easier to run, jump and play. These bright-red options come in sizes from 2T-13 years.
Old Navy School Uniform Button-up Cardigan ($12): A cardigan is a must in every girls' wardrobe, and if she doesn't have one in red, this one is bound to become a go-to favorite.
