GMB's Susanna Reid heartbroken over 'senseless' death of Michael Mosley as she issues update

Susanna Reid has been left devastated by the "senseless" passing of Michael Mosley.

The beloved TV doctor, known for his frequent contributions to ITV shows like This Morning, met with a tragic end on the Greek island of Symi. His body was discovered in a secluded area behind a wall and fence near the Agia Marina resort, having possibly strayed from a rocky path and succumbed to the intense heat or an unfortunate fall.

Clare, his wife, released an emotional statement following the discovery of his body a mere steps away from the sea and a gate leading to a nearby resort. She said: “We’re taking comfort in the fact that he so very nearly made it." Michael was still holding the purple umbrella he had taken with him on his walk.

On Monday's episode of Good Morning Britain, a sombre Susanna reflected: "There is a huge outpouring of love and sadness over the death of Michael Mosley... People are absolutely gobsmacked on what on earth could possibly have happened. He was on this gorgeous Greek island, he'd been there before with his wife. He just leaves the beach to make his way to the accommodation - it just seems - everyone scratches their head. Had he taken a wrong turn? Perhaps he got dehydrated - his wife said he did have a bottle of water; he had his umbrella. There's that sense of why did it happen? Could it have been avoided? Why on earth it's taken so long to find him?"

She later added: "It just seems so senseless really. Of course, this is our top news this morning because his body has been transferred to the Greek island of Rhodes. There there will be a post-mortem. A preliminary examination has ruled out any foul play."

Michael's wife Clare issued a devastating statement following the confirmation that he had passed away. She described him as an "adventurous" man, as she paid tribute to those on the island who had "worked tirelessly" to find him.

In a heartbreaking statement, his wife Clare shared: "I don't know quite where to begin with this. It's devastating to have lost Michael, my wonderful, funny, kind and brilliant husband. We had an incredibly lucky life together. We loved each other very much and were so happy together. I am incredibly proud of our children, their resilience and support over the past days."

"My family and I have been hugely comforted by the outpouring of love from people from around the world. It's clear that Michael meant a huge amount to so many of you. We're taking comfort in the fact that he so very nearly made it. He did an incredible climb, took the wrong route and collapsed where he couldn't be easily seen by the extensive search team."

She further expressed: "Michael was an adventurous man, it's part of what made him so special. We are so grateful to the extraordinary people on Symi who have worked tirelessly to help find him. Some of these people on the island, who hadn't even heard of Michael, worked from dawn till dusk unasked. We're also very grateful to The Press who have dealt with us with great respect. I feel so lucky to have our children and my amazing friends. Most of all, I feel so lucky to have had this life with Michael. Thank you all."
