A new year often means a fresh start, and what better way to signal this than with a change in hair style? That’s what Fearne Cotton has done, at least.

The broadcaster revealed on Instragram that she has lobbed off her blonde locks and is now the proprietor of a choppy fringe.

“For the first [time] since my teen years I took photos into the hairdressers,” the 41-year-old explained in the caption, adding: “As a teen I took in photos of the John Frieda twin models and came out with a feathered mullet.”

Cotton cited Suki Waterhouse and “Michelle Pfeiffer in Scarface” as her inspirations for her new look.

“Thank you to my hairdresser @paulpercivalhair for not drawing attention to the fact that I am not a young, super cool rock star actor, nor in an 80's film and for agreeing to cut a fringe,” she added.

“My kids will no doubt hate it, I bloody love changing things up and pretending I'm a new person for a bit. Bring on the fringes.”

Cotton’s fringe has received a warm reception, with cook Melissa Hemsley writing: “Hell yes to the fringe.”

Fashion designer Coco Fennell commented with two heart-eye emoji, while former Love Island presenter Laura Whitmore wrote: “She bangs!”

Fringes are certainly having a moment, as seen in everyone’s favourite pre-Christmas binge-watch show, Emily in Paris, which saw Lily Collins chop her hair into a fringe in the first episode.

While they were dubbed “trauma bangs” on the show, Collins later posted a video of herself to her Instagram page showing the process, and writing: “Not exactly trauma bangs… unlike Emily, I didn’t cut these myself! Big thank you to the master @gregoryrussellhair for inducting me into my fringe era and starting Emily’s new hair journey…”
