Fans of beloved long-running series 'heartbroken' as it's cancelled in surprise move
Heartbroken fans have taken to social media to share their upset at the cancellation of NCIS Hawaii, after US TV network CBS announced that the show will be finishing with its upcoming series three finale.
Reacting to the news, actress Vanessa Lachey, who stars in the show as Jane Tennant, shared that she was "blindsided by the decision." Posting to her Instagram Story, she wrote: "Gutted, confused, blindsided.
"Grateful, confident, beloved fans." She then added: "Processing this news and still being present with my family. I love you all! Mahalo Nui Loa."
Fans have since taken to X, formerly Twitter, to share similar sentiments. One wrote: "This show deserves more seasons! This cast deserves better! uncancel the show! #SaveNCISHawaii #RenewNCISHawaii #NCISHawaii"
"I am so, so sad about this. there's no good reason for it, and the optics are awful. this was a GREAT, successful, popular show that was part of an established & wealthy franchise. this wasn't fathomable a month ago. entirely f*cked. #NCISHawaii they should have #RenewNCISHawaii" added another.
While a third penned: "What I love most about #NCISHawaii, above anything else, is these have really sad backgrounds, often featuring abandonment, and they've created a found family. This message saves lives! @CBS @CBSTVStudios @paramountplus #RenewNCISHawaii #SaveNCISHawaii #NCISHawaii"
Fans also created a petition calling on the network to reverse their decision. The petition labels the show a "beacon of representation and inspiration" and goes on the describe the positive ways the storylines shown have impacted the lives of the show's fans.
The petition reads: "The show has broken barriers by portraying women in leading roles, inspiring countless girls and women to see themselves as leaders. The two lesbian characters have helped many viewers come to terms with their sexuality, providing much-needed representation on mainstream television.
"Furthermore, storylines dealing with PTSD and trauma have offered solace to those grappling with similar issues in their own lives. Beyond its impact on individual viewers, NCIS: Hawaii has also brought together a diverse fandom community that spans across ages and backgrounds. It has breathed new life into an already beloved franchise by attracting a wider audience.
It continues: "However, this beacon is under threat as CBS have cancelled the show after only its third season. Such an action does not only disappoint fans but also rob many viewers of these important representations and narratives.
"We urge CBS to continue producing NCIS: Hawaii for multiple more seasons or at least provide us with a full Season 4 to bid farewell properly to these beloved characters who have become part of our lives over the years."
