While some actors rotate hairstyles as often as their wardrobe, Elle Fanning's trademark blonde lengths have always been something of a constant for the actress – until now. The Great star debuted a classic blunt bob via Instagram yesterday, a drastic departure for the actress, whose signature hairstyle has been unwaveringly consistent since she first appeared on screen in 2001.

Striking but sophisticated, this polished new cut borrows from 2024's coveted 'old-money' bob; the fluffy trim sidelines trendy layers and instead maintains a timeless blunt length, paired with minimal tapering or even no feathering at all. And while this unexpected cut is a clear departure from Fanning's go-to style, the actress remained true to the classic butter-blonde tone she is known for. Clean and effortless, this ‘quiet luxury’ cut is one of the most elegant hair updates to opt for this spring.

Fanning is, of course, far from the first to brave the bob in recent weeks. Fellow actress Sydney Sweeney also retired her long blonde hair in favour of a classic, chin-length crop for the Oscars earlier this month. Slightly more framing than Elle's airy cut, the Euphoria star's springtime hair update was complete with curled and textured tips and a flatteringly voluminous side fringe. Glamorous, to say the very least.

Gigi Hadid can also be added to the list of those embracing the chop; the model traded her California waves for a naturally wispy jaw-grazing bob just two weeks ago, while Jennifer Aniston added a sleek '90s bob to her list of iconic hairstyles.

Tempted to go for the chop yourself? “Ask for a length that suits your face and proportions,” is hair stylist and trend forecaster Tom Smith's advice. “Between the collarbone and jaw is best, styled with either a side parting or a middle parting," he told Bazaar, in regard to the 'old-money' bob. "If your face is wider, opt for a longer length, while if it is longer or slimmer, have the length sit closer to the chin.”
