Duchess Of Cambridge Recycles 10-Year-Old Coat For Royal Garden Party

It’s been a busy week for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. Not only have they been in attendance at several royal engagements to mark the Queen’s 90th birthday, they were also pictured paying their respects to the victims of the Orlando massacre at the US embassy in London.

But with an official diary so jam-packed, it’s likely the Duchess hasn’t had time to give much thought to her wardrobe. And when you need an occasion-appropriate outfit to-go, it’s best to turn to something you know works.

So once again, Kate has proved the value of investing in a timeless classic, shunning quick-fix, disposable fashion in favour of an elegant champagne coat she’s worn, not once, but three times before.

The Duchess was attending the Annual Garden Party in Hillsborough Castle, Northern Ireland and opted for a brocade coat by DAY Birger et Mikkelsen she’d first debuted ten years ago at the wedding of Laura Parker Bowles.

This time round Kate freshened up the champagne lace dress and coat combo by accessorising with a bespoke rose-shaped hat by the world’s oldest hat company, Lock Hatters, and new gold and topaz, £2,900 earrings by one of her favourite jewellers Kiki McDonough. Of course, her classic nude court shoes and matching clutch from LK Bennett also made an appearance, alongside a gold shamrock brooch that was presented to her as a wedding gift from the Irish Guards.

Since the designer coat’s first outing in 2006, Kate has worn the Day Birger coat and Dinnigan dress on two more occasions – in 2012 for Zara Phillips and Mike Tindal’s big day and then again later that year for the opening ceremony of the Paralympics.

Kate and husband, William chatted with the 2,500 guests from a wide cross-section of Northern Ireland society, including the voluntary and community sectors, local charities and youth organisations, as well as members of the Irish and Scottish military.

Her appearance at the event follows a weekend of fashion highs for the Duchess, including a previous season Roksanda Ilinic colour-block dress, a light blue Catherine Walker number and her old-faithful Alexander McQueen coat-dress that she wore to the Queen’s 90th Birthday celebrations.

But one of Kate’s sartorial choices sparked some light-hearted controversy, as though the Queen reportedly introduced a rule which means hemlines of Royal outfits must be below the knee, in her pale blue Catherine Walker number Kate’s knees were clearly visible.

What a royal rebel eh?
