Melissa Dohme and Cameron Hill didn’t meet under the best circumstances.
In 2012, Melissa was savagely attacked by an ex-boyfriend who stabbed her 30 times. Cameron was one of the paramedics who treated her at the scene of the crime.
EMT Cameron later stated that when he arrived to treat her, Melissa was so drenched in blood he couldn’t even tell she had blonde hair.
After being airlifted to hospital, the then 20-year-old suffered a stroke and nearly didn’t make it.
Thirty stab wounds to the face, back, arms and shoulders left the student with partial nerve damage to her face, permanent scars, missing teeth and an eye that wouldn’t shut.
Instead of falling victim to her injuries, Melissa became a spokeswoman against domestic violence and it was through one of her talks she met Cameron again.
In autumn 2012, Cameron surprised her at a talk she was giving in a local church, they arranged to meet up and have been together since.
Fast forward two-and-a-half years to a baseball game in Tampa, Florida.
Thanks to her charity work, Melissa was asked to throw the first pitch at a Tampa Bay Rays game but little did she know Cameron had a plan.
He arranged it so that he was the one to bring her the ball on the pitcher’s mound in front of thousands of fans and on it was written: ‘Will you marry me?’
She said yes.
In the UK, two women are killed by a current or former male partner every week.
Melissa’s attacker Robert Lee Burton Jr. pleaded guilty to attempted murder in 2013.
