Loretta Lynn

Often referred to as the 'Queen of Country Music', Loretta Lynn was a pioneer in the genre who paved the way for future generations of female country artists.

Her ground-breaking hit ‘Coal Miner’s Daughter’ resonated with generations of working-class women and her life and career were celebrated in the biographical film of the same name, which starred Sissy Spacek.

Born into a mining community in Butcher Hollow, Kentucky in 1932, she lived most of her life in Hurricane Mills, a small town in Tennessee she stumbled across in 1966 with her husband Oliver ‘Doolittle’ Lynn, whom she married at just 15.

Loretta initially had her eye on the antebellum-style mansion on the hill, but ended up buying the entire estate when she was told she couldn’t buy the house without its accompanying 3,500 acres (1,416ha). She lived with her husband and family in the mansion from the late 1960s until 1988 (the height of her success), then moved to a smaller residence behind the main house on the hill, seen here.

The mansion was converted into a museum, Loretta Lynn Ranch, where visitors can see photographs and other memorabilia of her career and her rise from a poverty-stricken childhood in Kentucky to a musical legend.

An exact replica of the Butcher Holler cabin where she grew up was built on the ranch to give music fans an insight into her early struggles.

Life was a lot more comfortable in her home in Hurricane Mills, where the star is seen photographed by her piano in 1997.

Despite her icon status, Lynn shunned living in a more secure gated community and continued to live in the town close to the museum and the thousands of fans who visit every year and could often be seen in the grounds.

As well as the mansion museum, the site includes a huge area for camping and there are activities including horseback riding and jeep and motorcycle events.

Lynn already had four children by the time her recording career took off in the early 60s, so she probably knew a thing or two about cooking up a treat for her family. She had a set of twins some years later. No wonder she installed a slick modern kitchen in her home in Hurricane Mills.

Recording her first single in 1960, Loretta went on to sell more than 45 million records and was worth around $65 million (£52m) by 2020. She continued to tour late on into her life and released her 50th album in 2021 aged 89, winning numerous awards over her lifetime, including three Grammys. One was for the 2004 album Van Lear Rose, a collaboration with Jack White of the White Stripes which introduced her to a new generation of fans.

Seen here posing for a photo shoot in 1997, Loretta looks relaxed in her light-filled home. With cool marble floors and stylish (for the time) floral upholstery, the home was clearly a sanctuary for the star.

She was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2013, when President Obama said Lynn “gave a voice to a generation, singing what no one wanted to talk about and saying what no one wanted to think about.”

The singer suffered ill health in her later years following a stroke in in 2017 but died peacefully in her sleep at home in Hurricane Mills in October 2022 aged 90.

Patsy Cline

Born in Virginia during the Great Depression, Patsy Cline rose above a difficult childhood to become the most popular female country singer in recording history.

Frequently cited as an inspiration by many top country artists, Cline is known for 'Walkin' After Midnight', 'I Fall to Pieces' and 'Crazy'.

Her impact is all the more remarkable considering she died in a plane crash in 1963, aged just 30. Despite her short life, she became the first female solo artist ever to be inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1973. And, paving the way for Taylor Swift, Cline was one of the first country music stars to cross over into pop.

As a child, Patsy's family moved 19 times before the singer turned 15, when she dropped out of school after her father deserted them. It's no wonder that she desired a dream home of her own, which she got when she bought this four-bedroom home in Goodlettsville, Tennessee in 1962.

Sadly, she lived in the house with her husband and two children for just 10 months before her death. An official plaque outside the building commemorates it as 'Patsy Cline's Dream House.' It was featured on CBS Sunday Morning's YouTube channel, revealing the interiors.

The house was last sold in December 2021, for a bargain $540,000 (£426k) and the previous owners went to great lengths to preserve and restore the mid-century home.

"It took almost three years to restore the house back to life again the way it used to be," Tom Courtois, who had owned the home along with his husband for 10 years, told CBS News.

"I took the carpeting out... the hardwood floors are still original. They've never been refinished," he said. "We tried to save as much of the original decor as possible."

The basement was transformed into a bedroom that was rented out to country fans. The padded red leather bar is studded with the words 'Patsy & Charlie,' in homage to the singer and her second husband.

Although Charlie sold the house in 1966, their daughter Julie revisited the house 50 years after they moved in and recalled the day her furniture arrived, according to CBS News:

"I think I was three, 1962... My mother and grandmother were here... they set up my pretty French provincial bedroom with the canopy and the little desk-type of vanity with the chair and the white cushiony seat."

"The main thing is the bathroom, [it's] all original," Courtois said. "[It] was her pride and joy... when somebody came to visit her, she would take them and show them her bathroom." Indeed, you can easily imagine Patsy teasing her hair into her trademark up-do in front of this very mirror.

Speaking to Country Now, Brian Mansfield, Country Insider editor and country music historian said: “It was the house she aspired to, and then laid in state there...She’s just all through that house."

George Strait

Known as the 'King of Country', singer, songwriter, actor and music producer George Strait has no shortage of strings to his bow.

During a career spanning more than 30 years, he's had more platinum or multiplatinum-selling albums than any other country artist and was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame back in 2006.

He smashed another record in his chart-topping career in June 2024 when he played the largest ticketed concert in US history before a crowd of 110,905 fans. He's also got an eye for real estate as his incredible Texas mansion shows...

George Strait's custom mansion, Texas, USA

Prominent, palatial and entirely unique, George Strait's mansion in San Antonio is in a league of its own. The singer commissioned the Texan compound in the mid-1990s, hiring sculptor-turned-architect Bill Tull to design a bespoke mansion.

Strait and his wife, Norma, bought the land in the upscale Dominion Country Club neighbourhood of San Antonio in the mid-90s. Unsurprisingly, the impressive estate took two years to build but it seems the wait was well and truly worth it. The 7,925-square-foot (736sqm) mansion consists of three bedrooms and six baths then a fully self-contained casita has one bedroom and bath, a living room and kitchenette.

Inside, the mansion is meticulously presented with some seriously unique interior design touches. From stained-glass windows to saguaro cactus rib shutters, exposed adobe walls, rustic timber beams, hand-crafted tiles and hand-sculpted beehive fireplaces, this pad is sophisticated and special in equal measure.

A chef's kitchen and a wine cellar suggest expensive taste when it comes to dining. We wonder which high-profile guests came for dinner...

Many of the rooms open to outdoor entertaining spaces including the master suite, which boasts spectacular panoramic views across the countryside. Outside, there's the detached one-bedroom guest house or 'casita', as well as a tennis court.

The property sits on over 12 acres (5ha) of land that the Straits made excellent use of. Surrounding the property is a gorgeous garden with an infinity-edge pool and spa overlooking San Antonio.

Strait holds the record for the most number-one hits in country music history and has sold 70 million records in America alone, so it's no real wonder that he can afford to build himself a customised masterpiece.

However, he decided to wave goodbye to his longtime, custom-built home in 2018, with an initial listing price of $10 million (£7.9m). The estate was relisted in 2021 for $7.5 million (£6m) with the singer's daughter-in-law Tamara Strait and sold for an undisclosed sum thereafter.

Tammy Wynette

American country star and one of the biggest-selling female singers during the late 1960s and first half of the 1970s, Tammy Wynette is certainly country music royalty.

Born in Mississippi and later known as the ‘First Lady of Country Music’, her most well-known song is ‘Stand by Your Man,' which was a little ironic, seeing as she was married five times. Like Patsy Cline, she made an extraordinary impact on country music, despite living a tragically short life.

This Nashville property was built in 1970 and purchased for Tammy by husband George Jones in 1974, making 4121 Franklin Pike a piece of music history.

Known to many as First Lady Acres, according to the listing, an invitation to the abode quickly became more coveted than an invitation to the White House and earned a spot on Entertainment Weekly's "What's Country in America?”.

Sold in 2017 for $3 million (£2.4m), the property last belonged to Grammy-winning drummer, Scott Underwood since 2016.

Found within the coveted Oak Hill area, the 10,000-square-foot (929sqm) abode spans across eight wooded Tennessee acres with nine bedrooms and nine bathrooms, alongside a gourmet kitchen, cinema and exercise room. A 'snuggery' also awaits, for cosy relaxation after all those raucous country gigs and parties no doubt.

The grounds themselves boast a putting green, swimming pool and a handy safe room for high-profile residents to feel secure. There's even a helipad, naturally, for guests that need to fly in.

According to the listing, Scott and his wife, LA designer Cheryl Underwood, began a true labour of love when they began refurbishing First Lady Acres, preserving the architectural integrity of the estate's history, whilst creating a more contemporary Californian-style space.

Speaking to Curbed, the refurbishment team called the home “the embodiment of 1970s decor”, leaving Tammy’s fabulous closet largely untouched.

Seen here at home by her beloved piano, Tammy died at home in her sleep in April 1998, aged just 55. A public memorial was attended by 1,500 people and her funeral was attended by some of country music's biggest stars.

That included Dolly Parton, who was so upset she couldn't finish a song she performed at the service. "She'll always be dear to me. She'll always be special. She'll always live in our memories," Parton said.

One of the most beloved country music stars, Dolly Parton is best known for timeless hits such as “Jolene” and “I Will Always Love You”.

Born into a humble farming family in Tennessee in 1946, today she’s a global icon, whose appeal lies not just in her outstanding musical talent but in her charismatic personality and eye-catching outfits.

Over her five-decade career, she has released 41 top ten country albums, has had 25 number one singles and has sold more than 100 million records. No surprise then to learn that she has a net worth of $650 million (£512m) and counting.

Despite her immense wealth, Dolly resided at the same home for 16 years. Bought in 1999, it was nicknamed Willow Lake Plantation. Since Dolly first moved in ten structures have been added to the site, including her stunning main house.

After moving to Nashville in 1964 to pursue her singing career, Dolly reportedly met her husband, Carl Dean, outside a Laundromat. Within two years the pair were married, and Parton’s career took off.

By 1980 she was a household name, had starred in the movie 9 to 5 with Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin, and earned millions of dollars of royalties as singer/songwriter. A simple country girl at heart, Parton decided to snap up the modest abode in Tennessee.

The four-bedroom, two-bathroom home was built in 1941 and spans 4,795-square-foot (445 sqm) of living space.

With an eat-in kitchen and a great room spacious enough for entertaining guests, we’re sure the Partons were happy here in their two-storey, single-family residence.

Standing on 2.4 acres (1ha) of land, the property was once a successful owner-occupied bed and breakfast named ‘Dolly’s Getaway.’ When Dolly moved into the abode in 1980, her now classic '9 to 5' theme song was reaching No.1 across the music charts, from country to pop.

Although they lived in the Tennessee residence from 1980 to 1996, Dolly and her husband were dreaming about their next move. In a New York Post interview for her book Dolly on Dolly, the singer describes how they would go window shopping for their ideal home:

"[We would] drive down to Mississippi for our anniversary with this old camera and we’d take pictures of parts of the Southern mansions we liked. A porch here, a pillar there. Then we’d take ’em home and look at ’em real hard, puttin’ it all together in our minds."

Dolly occasionally shared pictures of her life at home, like this rather sweet image from her Instagram of her and French Bulldog Billy the Kid cuddling next to some vibrant palm tree wallpaper and a colourful parrot pillow.

With two bathrooms, a walk-in closet and dual heating and cooling units, the modest abode wasn’t lacking in amenities. But the pair sold up in 1996 for a rather profitable $140,000, or around $277,000 (£218k) in today’s cash, after enjoying the longtime Nashville pad for 16 years together.

Johnny Cash

Often called the ‘Man in Black’ due to his habitual attire, Johnny Cash is an iconic figure in American music, celebrated for his deep resonant tones and his focus on social and political issues.

Best known for songs such as ‘Ring of Fire’ and ‘Folsom Prison Blues’, he earned his first number-one hit on the Billboard charts in 1956 with ‘I Walk the Line’, which he wrote during his first marriage to Vivian Liberto, seen here the following year with two of their four daughters, Rosanne and Kathy.

Johnny Cash’s quiet refuge, California, USA

Selling over 90 million records worldwide, Cash established himself as one of the best-selling artists of all time and was worth around $60 million (£47m) at the time of his death in 2003. It’s no wonder that the versatile artist needed to get away from it every now and then.

In 1961, he built this 4,500-square-foot (400sqm) home in rural Casitas Springs, California as a quiet refuge where he could escape the demands of his rock ‘n’ roll lifestyle.

He lived here with his wife Vivian Liberto and their daughters until the couple’s divorce in 1966 and is said to have held concerts on the hill above the house so the whole town could join in.

The double-gabled house, which was built to Johnny's strict specifications, is set on nearly six acres (nearly 3ha) of land, set among the hills, trees and flowers he loved so much.

At the heart of the property is this traditional family room with its country-motif curved-brick fireplace and wagon wheel light fitting. The wood-panelled studio where Johnny wrote many of his biggest hits is preserved, as is an original wall-mounted turntable.

Subsequent owners have added their own modern touches which combine well with the original country style.

They must have struck the right chord with the most recent buyers at least, who purchased the house for $1.8 million (£1.4m) in 2023, which was $55,000 (£43k) above the asking price.

The house also includes a pool, office, barbecue area and sweeping views of the Ojai Valley.

Johnny Cash’s quiet refuge, California, USA

Upstairs there are five bedrooms, including two his-and-her master bedroom suites, which were created due to Johnny’s routine of writing music late into the night and early morning.

Johnny Cash went on to marry fellow country singer and songwriter, June Carter in 1968. June, who co-wrote his hit 'Ring of Fire' with Merle Kilgore, played a key role in Johnny Cash’s recovery from addiction.

According to Architectural Digest, Vivian remained in the house following her divorce from the singer, eventually selling it in the early 1970s.

Alan Jackson

Born in 1958 in Georgia, Alan Jackson is one of America's biggest country music stars, and his estimated $150 million (£118m) net worth proves it! Jackson has recorded 21 studio albums, including two Christmas albums, and two gospel albums, as well as released three greatest-hits albums.

Moving to Nashville and putting his fortune to good use, the 'Chattahoochee' singer had a stunning estate built back in 2011.

In the city of Franklin, just outside Nashville, Tennessee, the mansion sits on a hilltop, surrounded by four acres (2ha) of land and shrouded in idyllic woodlands. Spanning 22,000 square feet (2,044sqm), the jaw-dropping home was designed by acclaimed architect Ron Farris and looks like something fit for a king.

Jackson began his Last Call Tour in 2024, marking the last time he'll perform live in many American cities. Jackson said: “I’ve been touring for over 30 years – my daughters are all grown, we have one grandchild and one on the way…and I’m enjoying spending more time at home. I’m going to give my fans the best show I can for this Last Call.”

Seen here at Christmas 2018, the home's floor plan includes five bedrooms and seven bathrooms, as well as endless living rooms, all elegantly presented. There's a grand foyer, a large chef’s kitchen, a formal dining room and a timber-panelled lounge that offers scenic views across the garden.

Even with all that space, the Jacksons still have a cosy setup that's perfect for the festive season it would seem. Warm lighting and a foliage print sofa complement the timber and (of course) enormous Christmas tree adorned with plenty of red and gold.

Jackson was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2017 by Loretta Lynn and into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2018. As busy as his career is, it's just as well the home offers plenty of spaces for relaxation, like this comfortable looking bedroom.

When the star was ready to entertain again, the home allowed for that too. There's a large home theatre with a bar, a piano room and sumptuous guest suites. Some even feature balconies overlooking the huge garden, which Jackson likes to enjoy via his quad bike, sharing this picture to his Instagram with the hashtag #KeepinItCountry.

There's plenty to admire outside, too. As well as expansive lawns and lush landscaping, the beautiful backyard is also home to a loggia, a swimming pool (right in this image), a pool house, an outdoor kitchen, two temperature-controlled garages and numerous outdoor living areas.

In late 2020, the singer decided to part ways with his long-time home, placing it on the market with French King Fine Properties. It sold in March 2021 for a cool $19 million (£15m). Worth every dime!

Kenny Rogers

The late, great Kenny Rogers was known and loved for his music and was inducted into the County Music Hall of Fame in 2013. In 2015, the Hall of Fame hosted the exhibit, 'Kenny Rogers: Through The Years' sharing some of his life and (many) works with the world.

In addition to his extensive solo work, Rogers recorded a series of hits with country legends Dottie West and Dolly Parton.

With iconic hits such as 'Love Lifted Me' and 'The Gambler' to his name, Rogers' name lives on as a legend of the genre, however, he also left behind a substantial real estate legacy too...

Kenny Rogers' sprawling equestrian ranch, Georgia, USA

In fact, the renowned American singer-songwriter personally designed this all-encompassing estate in Georgia, USA. Spanning a whopping 973 acres (394ha), Rogers commissioned Beaver Dam Farms back in the 1980s.

Rogers grew up poor, living with his parents and six siblings in a federal housing project. "I was raised in the projects in Houston, Texas, and I always had this dream of doing something spectacular," Rogers said of his home, and we couldn't agree more.

It's said that upon completion of the colossal property, Rogers stated that he knew he'd finally realised his dream of becoming a successful musician. The Athens mansion covers 12,000 square feet (1,115sqm) and is every bit as luxurious as you'd expect.

The seemingly endless estate features five guesthouses, two swimming pools and two clay tennis courts. There are even three stocked fishing lakes and a huge 70,000-square-foot (6,503sqm) equestrian centre, complete with stalls, paddocks, pastures, an outdoor riding ring and a private 18-hole golf course.

When Rogers put the home up for auction in 2016, he said: "I remember when I was young, I would walk through the wealthy part of town on my way to school and saw the automated sprinklers and thought, 'one day I'm going to have those.' So, when I built the golf course, I would go out and sit on the golf cart and watch the sprinklers."

With marble columns and floors, coffered ceilings and high-end furnishings, the seven-bedroom house oozes opulence. Every room is vast and highly decorative, while large windows frame the grounds outside.

Elsewhere, there's a gourmet kitchen, six bathrooms, two gyms, a billiard room and a movie theatre, making this the ideal retreat for both work and play. Other key selling points include the property's garden, which offers streams, waterfalls and woodland hiking trails.

In 2003, the Grammy Award-winning singer sold his VIP ranch to real estate investor Wes Adams, who initially used it as a private home before turning it into a resort with full accommodation, spa and event rentals.

After Adams' death in 2011, it was put up for auction in 2016 with a starting price of just $3.5 million (£2.8m), which included all of the estate's furnishings, many of which had been passed on by Rogers.
