How to write the perfect dating app profile, according to experts
New year, new … partner? It’s official: January is the most popular month to find a new match.
If dating is on the cards for you this year, then pull up your phone and start swiping as a new report from Tinder has found that for the month of January, all through to Valentine’s Day in February, there are 11.4 million more messages sent on the platform compared to the rest of the year, along with 58.7 million more likes given out.
In fact, January 7 marks ‘Dating Sunday’ as this date sees the highest surge of popularity on the app during this period, with users responding to messages nearly 20 minutes faster than other Sundays throughout the year.
Last year’s Dating Sunday saw 22% more messages sent on the app compared to other times of the year, with 18.2% more likes given.
So, how can you ensure your profile is primed and ready for dating’s busiest and most action-filled day of 2024? Tinder’s Global Relationship Insights Expert, Paul C. Brunson, reveals exactly how to prepare, below.
Be authentic
Meeting someone and falling in love is all about allowing them to see the real you, and fall in love with that version of yourself, so why not reflect as much of this as you can in your dating profile?
"People want to see you for who you are and authenticity is important above all else to young singles," Brunson explains.
"Focus on images that capture your true personality at different times, in different scenarios - from social situations with friends, to a selfie that shows off your smile. The golden rule is to have at least five photos."
Use your words
Date from Tinder says that the optimal amount of words in a dating app bio is between 15 and 45.
"It’s important to make these words count as research shows that more than two in five (45%) of singles prefer when their potential match is clear about what they want in their dating app bio," Brunson says.
"Remember that the best dates happen when you have time to get to know each other on the app before meeting in real life."
Showcase your interests
"Common ground can reveal a lot about your compatibility with a potential match - and a simple icebreaker for your first interaction," Brunson explains.
"Your interests are what make you, you, and by sharing them you'll be more likely to meet people who match your energy."
Let your personality shine
Dating is all about first impressions, so Brunson suggests getting creative and personal with your profile.
"Ask questions you really want to know the answer to, or light a spark with asking your match about their favourite place to rave, or the name of their pet," he says. "You never know what you might learn."
Be clear with your intentions
"Being straightforward and honest about what you are looking for from a match will go a long way," Brunson says.
"40% of global Tinder users are looking for a serious relationship, while 13% of users are looking for something more ‘casual’. So embrace what it is you really want, honesty really is the best policy."
