Cult Buy: Everyone Was Wearing These Pieces During Fashion Month
With fashion month beginning in September, there's a resolutely back-to-school feel for the editors, stylists and influencers in attendance. And like the start of a new term, it offers up the opportunity to flaunt fresh purchases that usher in that nostalgic sense of newness — pencil cases are swapped for stealthy designer handbags, of course.
While individualism abounds amongst the fashion capitals' most-stylish, there are always going to be those trending items that crop up in their multiples. This is the place where catwalk looks turn into veritable, wearable trends. At the SS25 shows, there was a sense of the familiar amongst the newness, where editors and their peers revisited some classic outfit tropes. For instance, all-black is more than back.
Here, the items most-spotted by Team ELLE at the New York, London, Milan and Paris shows:
Chopova Lowena's Carabiner Skirt
Some wear theirs with a crisp black shirt, for others it's a hoodie and trainers, while most wear it with a matching Chopova Lowena T-shirt: the carabiner skirt can be worn a myriad ways. And so it was, especially at London Fashion Week, including on the catwalk asserting that it'll remain a must-have piece long into 2025.
Jimmy Choo's Lace-Up Shoes
Kitten heels have become a favourite of the fashion set for some seasons — much better for the long, long days and rickety show spaces than their predecessor platforms. The brand to have right now? Jimmy Choo once again. Last season it was its patent leather Didis but this time its all about the lace-up detail Scarlett 50 pumps
Aaron Esh's Baseball Cap
The baseball cap has always come loaded with a cool, laidback reputation, available to instantly transform a look in an instance. Now, with Aaron Esh's initials this is even heightened. Just ask the countless editors and buyers that relied on one during the shows.
Alaïa Teckel Bag
This bag has already asserted itself as the must-have bag of the year and this was only confirmed further over the last few weeks. In red, minuscule, large or loaded with studs — the bag was flaunted at each and every presentation.
The Leopard Print Coat
Fashion editors allowed their outerwear to take a little trip to the wild side at the shows. Most had a natty, modish silhouette in an ode to the 1960s, but each was worn to personal interpretation. It is considered a neutral by those in the know.
The Baggy Jean
While street style stars steal the show in bright prints and gargantuan silhouettes, magazine editors are more than likely to be seen in a pair of denim jeans and a laptop poking out of their bag. The silhouette of note at the shows was a bigger, baggier pair worn with ballet pumps primarily.
The All-Black Ensemble
Name a colour more associated with the chic and stylish? You can't. Black is back and they're wearing it top-to-toe. With colour out of the equation, it's all about silhouette: keep it sharp, shouldered and super sleek.
The Skirt Is Back
Forget its nine-to-five reputation as a piece of office-only ready-to-wear as the polish of the pencil skirt is back in a big way. Make like Bethann Hardison at the Gucci show and follow suit in styling your knee-grazing skirt with ankle socks and shoe-of-the-season kitten heels. It adds a cool quota the otherwise stuffy style needs, especially when paired with a leather jacket.
