Cressida Had An Alternate Ending On 'Bridgerton'Netflix

For reasons that remain confusing/I am taking deeply personally, we apparently have to wait two full years for Bridgerton season four. Though, on the plus side, that gives us plenty of time to come up with fan theories—including about Cressida Cowper.

There's been a lot of speculation as to why Bridgerton spent so much time developing Cressida's character only to send her away at the end of season three, but it turns out there was actually an alternate ending.

'We did shoot a different ending,' actor Jessica Madsen (aka Cressida) told Entertainment Weekly. 'I don't know whether she is going to her aunt's because we actually don't see her aunt in the carriage. So, it could be that she's off somewhere by herself.'

Jessica noted that in the first ending the show filmed, 'Lady Cowper actually came to save her, and got in the carriage with her and they left together. I had a caged bird in my hair with a little door and Lady Cowper had the key.'

So, why'd Bridgerton switch things up? Showrunner Jess Brownell says they wanted to keep the ending ambivalent so there'd be more room to play in season 4. 'We shot an alternate ending where her mother gets in the carriage at the end and actually chooses her daughter,' Brownell explained. 'It was a really beautiful moment. But in the edit, Shonda [Rhimes] and I talked about the fact that it felt like an ending for Cressida. It felt like it wrapped up her story and we intentionally wanted to leave it so that we can tell a bit more story with Cressida next season.'

Not trying to read into things, but if there's a world where Cressida's mom hopped into the carriage, that would seemingly imply that she'd left her husband...which would pave the way for a major fan theory.
