Since speculation of a feud between the Duchess of Sussex and Duchess of Cambridge began last year, there has been a narrative in some areas of the press, which has pitted the two women against one another.
Coverage of Meghan and Kate’s fashion choices has been one example.
The Duchess of Sussex proudly dressed her baby bump in a black one shoulder Givenchy gown for the British Fashion Awards in December. Her outfit was deemed “vulgar” by numerous outlets and headlines suggested she had “broken royal protocol,” with her choice of black nail varnish.
Less than two months later, the Duchess of Cambridge accompanied the Duke to the BAFTAs in a similar one shoulder dress by Alexander McQueen. In contrast, Kate’s look was referred to as “ethereal” and “angelic.”
Royal correspondent Omid Scobie told Yahoo UK‘s ‘The Royal Box’: “This definitely illustrates some of the bias that we have in some of the tabloids at the moment, certainly with online click bait.
“I think it’s become almost a bit of a trend to just sort of kick Meghan when she’s down and highlight things that may not necessarily actually be breaks in protocol.”
The Daily Mirror‘s fashion and beauty director Amber Graafland can’t understand why Meghan would have been criticised for her outfit and points out that the Fashion Awards was a special night for the duchess.
She says: “She [Meghan] was presenting an award to her wedding dress designer Clare Waight Keller, who for Givenchy, who had designed that beautiful dress for her.
“So actually to criticise her on an evening that had some kind of emotional connection for her was doubly mean.”
