A couple are looking for a nanny to help raise their child like he is in the Victorian times.
If you’re a nanny who has strict, eras-gone-by values then you could be in luck because a husband and wife are looking for someone just like that to provide some traditional childcare for their son.
Taking to online platform childcare.co.uk the couple placed the ad for the unusual employee as they think it is the only way to guarantee that their seven-year-old son will grow up well behaved and polite.
The ad explains that the previous nannies have either left or been terminated from the role after not being able to follow the parents’ strict instructions.
“We’re a traditional couple from a very traditional and patriotic family and are set on raising our children in a way similar to the Victorians,” the advert reads.
“The Victorian style of parenting helped create well-rounded, respectable and polite young people who went on in later life to become great and successful adults.
“This is the vision we have for our son and it’s something which has moulded our family, and our relationships with other families/friends.”
The ad goes on to list a number of strict rules the couple wish the nanny to adhere to including only allowing their son to speak the Queen’s English, restricting his play time to just an hour a day and ensuring he stays “dressed in his best” until he goes to bed.
They are also planning to ban his access to technology, in favour of books and wooden toys.
According to the advert, the chosen candidate should also show limited affection towards the child, in order not to spoil him, and the only contact should be shaking hands and a kiss on the head before bed if needed.
The parents went on to explain that they live by the idea that “children should be seen and not heard.”
The nanny will also need to be able to assist with home schooling of the couple’s son, which is also being carried out in a Victorian manner, with subjects including; Reading, Writing, Dictation, Arithmetic, Geography, Singing and History.
Though the role wouldn’t necessarily suit everyone, the parents are willing to pay a really quite substantial £55K yearly salary for the right person, with the selected candidate being entitled to 25 days holiday, plus bank holidays and sick days.
Commenting on the unusual parenting technique, Richard Conway, founder of Childcare.co.uk said: “The Victorian era is remembered in lots of different lights by people, however one thing we can all agree on is that children’s lives were very different back then. For rich children they’d have to be dressed in their smarts all day and not leave the house, and for the poor children some went to work as early as age four!
“Obviously, it’s up to parents how they raise their children, and we cater for all parent needs. Plus, who knows, maybe the balance of traditional and modern values could be a positive thing.”
It isn’t the first time that a couple have put out an unusual childcare request. Earlier this year, a mum and dad started a search to find an expert to help teach their children about the birds and the bees.
The controversial listing explained that the parents were looking for a childcare professional to teach the children “about the complexities of puberty, intimacy and consent” because they themselves are struggling to answer their questions.
