Coronation Street fans furious as Cassie pokes fun at cobbles icon Deirdre Barlow
Coronation Street viewers couldn’t believe their eyes when Cassie Plummer made fun of the iconic Deirdre Barlow during the episode on Wednesday 19 June.
Cassie had started working as Ken Barlow’s carer after being fired from her job at the garage. The day before, Cassie happened to be in the Rovers where she overheard the Barlows discussing how someone needed to be with Ken all day.
With the family struggling to organise a rota, Cassie quickly volunteered to do the job. But on her first day, Cassie made the terrible mistake of poking fun of Ken’s late wife, and beloved Coronation Street legend, Deirdre (played by Anne Kirkbride)- much to the anger of Corrie fans.
After making Ken a brew, Cassie went rifling in his furniture for medication when she stumbled upon a pair of glasses.
Holding back a laugh Cassie quickly put them on. She turned around, much to Ken’s horror, and said: “Hey, the 1980s have called, they want their specs back. Never had you down as a style icon, Ken.”
Sadly, Ken replied: “They belonged to my late wife, Deirdre.”
Cassie sheepishly put the specs back and said: “Oh, sorry. I was only messing.”
Despite her apology, fans weren’t happy with Cassie and took to social media to say what they really thought about her poking fun at a cobbles legend.
One said: “No Cassie. Do not disrespect Deirdre #Corrie .” Another added: “Cassie - now very dare you - you've touched the sacred glasses of our blessed Deidre."
A third responded: “Cassie has done some awful things, but none as unforgivable as making fun of Deirdre's specs. #corrie.” Another wrote: “Deirdre’s glasses get them off Cassie!”
A fifth joked: “It is abuse that they have Cassie looking after Ken.”
Ken then asked Cassie: “Didn’t they train you to respect other people’s property? As a professional carer, I would have thought that’s a basic thing.”
Cassie was confused and broke the news to Ken that she wasn’t professionally trained but that she just volunteered to help. Ken fired Cassie and wasn't pleased with his family for lying to him either.
Later on, Cassie returned to see Ken claiming she'd forgotten her purse leaving Ken food for thought regarding whether to keep her on as his carer. By the end of the episode, Cassie and Ken were getting along like a house on fire and reinstated Cassie as his carer.
