One Day star Leo Woodall (who plays Dexter Mayhew in the series) will be joining the sequel. Leo has become a household name since starring in the Netflix series adapted from the novel by David Nicholls, alongside Ambika Mod, who plays Emma Morley, in One Day.
Leo is rumoured to be playing Bridget's younger love interest in the fourth instalment as she prepares to get back into the dating world.
The film take its title from the latest Bridget Jones novel, published in 2013. It will see sees Bridget in her 50s a mother to two children and widowed following the death of Mark Darcy – however, it’s not clear whether this is the plot that the film adaptation will follow.
The Texan actress became a household name in the UK after taking on the unlucky-in-love role for the 2001 film adaptation of Helen Fielding’s best-selling 1996 novel, Bridget Jones’s Diary . It's now been more than two decades since Helen’s heroine first hit the silver screen, and Renée’s convincing English accent won the nation’s approval.
And as it’s been eight years since we last saw Bridget on screen in 2016’s Bridget Jones’s Baby, fans are very excited indeed about catching up with her latest exploits.
But the actress reckons she has plenty of similarities with Bridget and has said she often found her extremely relatable. “I completely relate to Bridget. More than I’d like to admit,” she said in 2016.
“I think all of us, including myself, relate to Bridget Jones in her imperfections. The heart of Bridget is the truth of who the person is versus who she thinks she’s supposed to be.” Since the release of the third Bridget Jones film, Renée went on to win her second Academy Award in 2020 for her leading role as famed singer and actress Judy Garland in the biographical film, Judy.
When asked about a fourth movie instalment, Helen Fielding previously told Radio Times: “Every film that gets made is a miracle. I think it's really difficult to make films and to make them happen and to make them good and we want it to be really good. But I really hope so. I'd love to see it on the screen.”
