This Brand Is Coming for Little Debbie With Its New Snack Line

It’s unexpected, but very welcome.

Let us set the scene: You run into a convenience store for a quick coffee, and as you pass the snack shelf, you think, “That coffee could use a friend.” But which friend among a sea of choices? Do you go with a Hostess Twinkie? Tastykake's Kandy Kake? A Donut Cake from Entenmann's? An Oatmeal Creme Pie from Little Debbie? The choice is so hard!

Well, Wonder Bread is about to make that choice even more difficult. The brand every kid had in their lunchbox for their PB&J or baloney sandwich is entering the snack world. Wonder, a brand that's been around since 1921, is adding snack cakes to its lineup of sandwich bread, rolls, English muffins, and bagels.

Instagram’s @Markie_Devo first broke the news to his followers, saying, “What the fork! Wonder Bread gets into the snack game! Thomas English Muffins, your move.”

The brand's parent company, Flower Foods, confirmed the release and lineup to Allrecipes, describing it as "a nostalgic yet modern take on convenience and indulgence...Perfect for a quick morning treat, lunchboxes, or as an afternoon pick-me-up." Here are the new products we can look forward to this year:

  • Creme Filled Confetti Cakes

  • Creme Filled Chocolate Cupcakes

  • Pecan Cinnamon Twists

  • Glazed Honey Buns

  • Brown Sugar Cinnamon Donut Sticks

  • Frosted Mini Donuts

  • Powdered Mini Donuts

We couldn’t help but notice that those tasty treats look awfully familiar to Little Debbie favorites like the Pecan Spinwheels and Honey Buns (same name, no less), and Hostess staples like the Donettes and Cupcakes. Now we're left to "Wonder," do we really need another brand to make our choices even more difficult than they already are?

Devo’s Instagram followers were divided on the necessity of these new goodies.

“Just why? We got enough snack cakes on the market,” one complained. But others were excited and left comments like, “Oh I never saw this coming but I’m excited to try them,” “Oooooo the confetti cakes!” and “Give me all the pecan cinnamon twists!”

We say the more, the merrier, even if they do resemble existing ones. Really, how many actual unique forms can a snack cake take? Little Debbie’s Swiss Rolls are basically the same as Drake's Yodels, right? (Both seem to have been introduced around 1962 or 1963, so it’s hard to know which came first.) Most companies have a snack that’s similar to at least one other brand. We foresee a taste test comparison in our future...It’s hard work, but someone has to do it!

The new products will launch in March at Walmart before hitting the shelves of other retailers later on. They will be available in single-serve and multi-serve sizes, allowing you to buy one to go with your aforementioned coffee or grab a pack for the whole crew to enjoy.
