Beyonce and Jay-Z’s daughter Blue Ivy Carter, 12, joins cast of Lion King prequel

Beyonce and Jay-Z's eldest, Blue Ivy Carter, is set to lend her voice to the upcoming Lion King prequel, Mufasa. The first trailer for the film, directed by Moonlight's Barry Jenkins, has just dropped.

The movie will delve into the backstory of the iconic lion and his relationship with brother Scar, voiced by Aaron Pierre and Kelvin Harrison Jr. respectively. Blue Ivy will be voicing Kiara, the daughter of King Simba and Queen Nala.

The Lion King also had a remake in 2019, which featured Donald Glover as Simba, Beyoncé as Nala and Chiwetel Ejiofor as Scar.

Beyonce is also set to return for the Mufasa film, which will include original songs from Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda. Other cast members include Mads Mikkelsen and Thandiwe Newton, with Seth Rogen, Billy Eichner and Glover also reprising their roles.

The teaser trailer was revealed on US breakfast show Good Morning America, where a voiceover described Mufasa as being born "without a drop of nobility in his blood" but someone who "would change our lives forever". This marks 12 year old Blue Ivy's first film role, although she's no stranger to the spotlight, having performed a dance routine during her mum's live tour.

Blue Ivy is the oldest of three, with younger siblings Rumi and Sir, both six. Mufasa: The Lion King is slated for a UK release this December.

And her sister Rumi has been making waves in the entertainment industry too as she recently broke the world record for the youngest female singer to hit the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

The daughter of the music legends managed to land in the Hot 100 after featuring on her mum’s track Protector, from the singer’s newly-released country album Cowboy Carter.

Protector charted at number 42 on the Hot 100, bringing in 11.3 million streams in the U.S. during its first week out.

The young star can be heard in the intro of the acoustic ballad saying to Beyoncé: "Mum, can I hear the lullaby please?”.

In the emotional song, Beyoncé opens up about motherhood and sings about being proud of and protecting her three children, twins Rumi and Sir Carter, and daughter Blue.

The 42-year-old songstress sings in the chorus: “And I will lead you down that road if you lose your way / Born to be a protector / Even though I know someday you're gonna shine on your own / I will be your projector.”

The previous record for the youngest artist in the charts was held by Rumi’s big sister Blue Ivy. Her older sibling landed in the charts in 2019 when she featured on her mum's song Brown Skin Girl at the tender age of seven.

Blue even went on to win her first-ever Grammy Award at the age of just 9 years old for starring in the music video of the same hit.
