BBC legal drama The Split is returning to our screens for a two-part special after the show came to an end in 2022 - and its welcoming a new cast member. The series stars Nicola Walker as family lawyer Hannah Defoe, navigating her high-intensity career with her complicated love life.

While the drama came to a close with series three, the BBC has revealed that the Defoe family will be back for a two-part special. Returning for the new episode, filmed in Spain, are cast members Stephen Mangan (Nathan), Annabel Scholey (Nina), Fiona Button (Rose), Deborah Findlay (Ruth), Ian McElhinney (Ronnie) and other stars.

The special will pick up two years on from the series finale, with Hannah and her family gathering for a beautiful wedding in Catalonia's wine region. "Set across one sun soaked weekend, The Split will encompass break-ups, reunions and like all good weddings, plenty of romance," the BBC teases.

"As the sun rises over the glorious Spanish countryside, Hannah is compelled to banish the ghosts of her past and open herself up to the possibility of love again. Can she find the courage to take the leap into a new future?"

Joining the show for the special is James Bond star Toby Stephens, who is best known for his roles in die Another Day, Jane Eyre, Black Sails and Lost in Space. He's set to play the role of Archie Moore - let's hope he's a potential love interest for Hannah!

Creator and writer Abi Morgan said in a statement: "In a world of brutal break ups and tantalising make ups, the Defoe family are invited to a destination wedding of their own, promising all that audiences have grown to love about The Split.

"Problematic prenups, scandalous wedding crashers, and low flying marriage proposals, as rom com meets gone wrong, in a chaotic and riotous weekend that guarantees to crack open the heart, before the last of the guests have gone home."

The two-part special is set to air ahead of the upcoming spin-off series The Split Up, which will follow the Kishans - a family of lawyers who reign supreme in the high-stakes world of Manchester's divorce law circuit.

Aside from The Split, fans will know Nicola Walker best for her starring role in ITV's Unforgotten, which she left in 2021. She has since starred in dramas Annika and Marriage, as well as Sky miniseries Mary & George.
