EastEnders got off to an explosive start during the week’s final visit to Walford, as the truth about Nadine Keller’s fake pregnanct was finally revealed to Jay Brown. As regular viewers will know, Stevie Mitchell uncovered Nadine’s deception at the end of Wednesday’s episode, with Thursday’s edition of the soap picking up just in time to see the devastating fallout.

Horrified and disgusted by the depths Nadine had sunk to, Jay was devastated by the truth and had little sympathy of the former sex worker when she tried to reveal the reason behind her unsuccessful con. In tense scenes, Nadine claimed that she had been blackmailed by Olivia for having secured a coveted internship placement with a law firm.

She added that in a fit of petty jealousy, Olivia had blackmailed her into paying for her silence, lest she unveil the truth about her past as a drug dealer and prostitute to the potential employer.

Feeling backed into a corner, Nadine pleaded with Jay as she declared: “I didn’t want to hurt you. Jay, she was going to ruin my life!”

However, Jay was quick to shoot back: “Oh, but you were going to ruin my life weren’t you? You had no problem doing that did you? I thought that you were having my baby. I trusted you. I defended you! If you’d just asked me I would’ve given you the money.”

In disbelief, Nadine then argued: “No you wouldn’t. I was just a girl that sold you ket and stood in for your dead wife," referring to the time that Nadine had sold Jay the drug ketamine.

Jay then bitterly said: “And I was just the easiest mark on your list. That’s all I was right? So your little friend ain’t going to ruin your life - I am. I think this counts as fraud doesn’t it?”

An emotional Nadine then pleaded: “Jay. Jay please don’t call the police! Jay I’m beginning you, have we not suffered enough?!”

As the conversation progressed, Jay later admitted how he had nearly died after meeting Nadine last year, and heartbreakingly told her that he thought the prospect of a new baby had given him something to live for. Unwilling to discuss it any further, Jay ordered Nadine to leave and the fraudster was forced to walk away wracked with guilt.

Following Nadine’s confession about the reason for her lies, fans at home were quick to share their thoughts, with many feeling something far deeper was at play than a simple surface level con over an internship.

One fan wrote: “Sorry Nadine is being blackmailed over an internship??” A second fan then added: “ 'She was going to ruin my life.' I think you did a good job at that yourself Nadine.”

Before a third fan commented: “Nadine’s excuse doesn’t add up. Who stoops that low over keeping a placement?”

Leaving a fourth to echo: “What was the point of this storyline? It’s over too soon. There’s got to be more to it than being worried her mate would grass.” Is there more to Nadine’s deception than meets the eye?
