BBC Amazing Hotels: Hassler Rome is one for the bucket list
Every property featured on the BBC’s Amazing Hotels: Life Beyond The Lobby
is exceptional. But of the best destinations that feature in series six, Rome was always going to be near the top of our list – after all, they don't call it the Eternal City for nothing.
This latest series of the brilliant programme features a selection of awe-inspiring destinations across Europe and further afield, as well as the welcome return of Monica Galetti (who will be a special guest on a Good Housekeeping cruise of Venice in 2025) and Rob Rinder.
Throughout seven intriguing and wanderlust-inducing episodes, the intrepid pair explore everything from a hotel built in and around ancient caves in Turkey's Argos in Cappadocia to the world's first 'earthscraper' underground hotel in Shanghai, InterContinental Shanghai Wonderland.
But it's the grandest hotels in Europe that have really caught our eye, and while Rome is full of beautiful Airbnbs, it's also home to some of the best hotels in the world, especially Hassler Roma, which features in the fourth episode of the new series.
As they do in each episode of the series, Monica and Rob ventured beyond Hassler Roma's gleaming lobby to take us inside the places the public don't usually get to see. This is particularly thrilling given that Hassler Roma, a Leading Hotel of the World, is one of the city's most celebrated hotspots – an icon that has been family-run for generations.
This five-star grande dame hotel is located in an unmatched position at the top of Rome's Spanish Steps, which means guests find themselves at the very heart of the city. Inside, there are 87 luxurious rooms and suites, each different from the last thanks to unique and carefully curated antiques and masterpieces.
On the sixth floor, you'll find nothing less than a Michelin-starred restaurant, Imàgo, which offers incredible views over the city of Rome. These are matched only by the creative Italian cuisine created by Chef Andrea Antonini.
There's also the iconic Hassler Bar, a popular spot for people-watching (after all, The Hassler has played host to rockstars and royalty for decades), a panoramic terrace on the seventh floor, a bliss-inducing spa and even a dedicated hair salon.
During their time in this bucket-list hotel, Monica and Rob learn all about the hotel's past, its illustrious former guests, and its plans for the future. They also get involved with all aspects of its running, pitching in with everything from cooking classic Roman carbonara to driving guests around in true style in a vintage Rolls Royce.
Inspired by the series and keen for an adventure of your own? You can take an exclusive cruise of the Venetian lagoon with Monica Galetti in April 2025 on a Good Housekeeping Holiday, exploring the sights without the usual crowds.
Amazing Hotels: Behind The Lobby aired on BBC Two on Thursday 12 September. The series is also available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
