Why is there a backlash against Meghan Markle?

The Duchess of Sussex has been subjected to a slew of negative press in recent months, with reports of “difficult” behaviour and a rumoured feud with the Duchess of Cambridge.
Meghan has moved to a new country, given up her acting career and has had to get grips with being a member of the Royal Family, quite often in view of the public eye and under intense scrutiny.
The Duchess hasn’t put a foot wrong when it comes to her duties, so why has she been subjected to so much criticism?
CNN Royal Contributor Victoria Arbiter says she was surprised by the backlash against Meghan, especially so soon after her first successful tour of the South Pacific.
She says: “I think successful, beautiful, glamorous women are always pitted against each other. Kate [Williams] and I covered the royal wedding, and we said at the time that the fall out was going to happen, I don’t think anyone expected it to be quite this quickly.”

Historian Kate Williams believes there’s “an element of racism” in some of the coverage surrounding Meghan, as well as “certain amount of anti-Americanism.”
She thinks that the unprecedented statement Prince Harry released about Meghan before the wedding, asking for privacy and respect, “really confirmed it for all of us that there is racism and there is sexism in the coverage of Ms. Markle.”
WIlliams adds that Meghan’s career may also have led to some of the unwarranted backlash.
“There is this vision that a woman who marries into the royal family must have no career.”
