Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's royal tour: What the Duke and Duchess will be doing in Australia and New Zealand
Kensington Palace has released the packed itinerary for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s autumn tour.
Prince Harry and Meghan will undertake an official visit to Australia, Fiji, Tonga, and New Zealand.
The couple will land in Sydney, Australia on October 16, where they will spend almost a week in the country, before flying to Fiji on October 23 and then to Tonga on October 25.
They will return to Sydney briefly on October 26, before spending their last four days of the trip in New Zealand.
Their Royal Highnesses have been invited to visit the Commonwealth Realms of Australia and New Zealand by the countries’ respective governments. The Duke and Duchess will visit Fiji and Tonga at the request of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.
The palace said in a statement: “The programme across these four Commonwealth countries will focus on youth leadership, and environmental and conservation efforts, including the dedication of several new Queen’s Commonwealth Canopy projects.”
The initiative begun in 2015 as a network of forest conservation programmes throughout the 53 countries of the Commonwealth of Nations.
So what exactly will Meghan and Harry be doing in each country throughout their 16-day tour? Here’s the full run-down.
Australia
Harry and Meghan land in Sydney on 16 October, where they will receive a welcome to Admiralty House by Governor-General Sir Peter Cosgrove. Later that morning, they will visit Taronga Zoo where they will be able to meet two koalas and their joeys. The couple will also take a trip to Sydney Opera House on their first day.
Highlights of their Australia visit include a trip to Bondi Beach, the Duke will climb the Sydney Harbour Bridge and a walk around one of Fraser Island’s lakes.
The Duke and Duchess will also attend the Invictus Games Sydney during their tour, which takes place between 20 and 27 October. The visit will also focus on the recovery and rehabilitation of servicemen and women through the Games, which were founded by Prince Harry.
They will be at the Opening and Closing Ceremonies and will watch a number of events throughout the tournament.
The pair made their first public debut as a couple at last year’s event in Toronto, two months before announcing their engagement in November.
Fiji
Harry and Meghan will arrive in Fiji’s capital, Suva, on 23 October, where they will meet His Excellency The President of Fiji. They will then attend an official welcome ceremony in the city centre’s Albert Park, which will involve a number of traditional elements of Fijian culture, including a Kava ceremony.
During their visit to the country, the Duke and Duchess will each undertake solo engagements.
Harry will travel to the Colo-i-Suva Forest Park to unveil the Queen’s Commonwealth Canopy Project while Meghan will attend a morning tea at the British High Commissioner’s Residence, to hear more about a UN Women’s project ‘Markets For Change,’ which promotes women’s empowerment in marketplaces throughout the Pacific.
Tonga
The couple will be welcomed by His Majesty King Tupou VI and Queen Nanasipau’u at an official reception and dinner, with traditional Tongan entertainment in Nuku’alofa on 25 October.
The following day, they will also meet with the Prime Minister of Tonga and attend an exhibition with Her Royal Highness The Princess Angelika at the Fa’onelia Centre, celebrating Tongan handicrafts and products.
New Zealand
Harry and Meghan arrive in Wellington on 28 October and will by met by the Prime Minister Rt. Hon. Jacinda Ardern.
They will attend a traditional welcome ceremony on the lawns of Government House in the afternoon and will be invited to hongi with the Governor-General’s Kuia and Kaumātua (Māori elders), before the pōwhiri, which includes a haka performed by members of the New Zealand Defence Force.
During the NZ leg of the tour, the Duke and Duchess will meet with young people in the mental health sector, go on a trail walk in Abel Tasman National Park and visit a Kiwi Breeding programme in Rainbow Springs in Auckland, where they will have an opportunity to name two young chicks.
They will visit Redwoods Tree Walk in Rotorua on October 31, before heading back to Auckland, where they will catch a flight back to London.
