5 Shoe Trends That Dominated the NYFW Runways

Following seasons of ultra-femme and nostalgia-driven shoe trends, the New York Fashion Week lineups have been full of edgier styles. It's like footwear is begging to be seen, urging its wearers to walk on the riskier side.

Brands like Carolina Herrera and Tory Burch embraced classic lady silhouettes with unique twists, while labels like Nanushka and Palomo Spain endorsed thigh-high styles. Meanwhile, rain preppers will be happy to hear weather-proof footwear is becoming fashionable for spring/summer 2025, thanks to brands like Collina Strada and Proenza Schouler. And much like the past few seasons, flats have dominated the runways, this time, with sleeker and sexier styles.

As New York Fashion Week wraps up, here are five of the biggest shoe trends for the spring/summer 2025 season. So start planning your spring shoe choices ahead, or just wear them now.

Flip-Flop Reworked

Get your pedicures ready because the toes will be out in thong sandals by next spring. For a few seasons now, the elevated flip-flop trend has dominated fashion, and while the silhouette is certainly still a must-have, designers are taking thong sandals in a few different directions. Sandy Liang, for example, featured thong flats with metal rings, while Alaïa displayed whale-tail-shaped versions.

Strapped In

Though Mary Jane and mesh shoes have dominated footwear trends this year, strappy sandals will likely take over by next spring. At least that's the memo from designers at New York Fashion Week. Tibi showed thin-strapped buckled versions, while Sergio Hudson styled ultra-femme tailoring with metallic strappy heels.

Ladylike

Fashion trends have taken a twist for ladylike silhouettes, especially when it comes to footwear. And next spring, it'll be all about the basic pumps—reworked. Take, for example, Tory Burch, which included patent versions with bent heels, while Carolina Herrera put bold embellishments on pump mules. And Tibi showed ultra-pointy pumps paired with tights in contrasting colors.

Weather-Proof

A trend tailor-made for spring, lug sole boots at the chic way to embrace the seasonal rain. Designers like Aknvas, Proenza Schouler, and PH5 included the rubbery silhouette, featuring everything from knee-high boots to lug sole mules. Both Proenza Schouler and PH5 collaborated with Sorel and Charles & Keith respectively for the lineups.

Walking On Air

It's not surprising that after a spring/summer season full of mesh flats designers are pushing for something even more laid-back: the sock shoe. Sure, they're not really socks but the idea is that you should feel as though you've left the house wearing a pair. Brands like Nanushka, Kallmeyer, and COS included flats that embodied the persona of socks, varying from thigh-high numbers to bold-colored versions. Come next spring, you should feel like you're walking on air.
