The 30 most cringe one liners guaranteed to put singles off
When you're looking to make a connection with a potential new date you may be tempted to try to impress by pulling out a one liner. But it seems those carefully curated messages can often come off more cringe than cute.
While some are put off by someone being too forward or a cheesy chat up line, others claim dull chat is enough to give them the 'ick' - and now a new survey has revealed the worst things singles have been sent.
The survey of 2,000 British adults, by new dating app Breeze, found that a simple "send pics" was the rudest message scooping 45% of the votes, while on an equally cheeky front 44% weren't happy about receiving a single aubergine emoji.
"Hey sexy what’s your number?" (40%) and "You’re so hawt" (34") both feature in the top 30 cringiest, dullest or most unimaginative texts.
Meanwhile four in ten (38%) wince when they receive "Without me?" when they say they are going for a shower, a third (34%) feel embarrassed upon reading "Phwoarr", according to the research.
The classic "Did it hurt when you fell from heaven?" (34%), "What u wearing?" (33%), "Imagine what our children will look like" (29%) and "I have serious co-dependency issues" (28%) also all failed to impress.
As well as revealing top message turn-offs, the poll also found talk is cheap when it comes to dating apps with more than half (56%) of UK singles insisting monotonous messaging is hard work and awkward (56%), while 40% are just plain bored of it.
A fifth compare messaging on a dating app to admin, while a tenth (11%) say it’s like having a second job.
In fact, dead chat is so tiresome that just three dull texts are enough for the nation’s daters to lose interest in someone completely.
Turns out some of us are turned-off straight away with 89% saying that a dull opening message causes them to want to tap out.
Asking if a friend in your pictures has an Instagram account also makes a third of daters feel queasy, along with asking a potential match to "Tell me why I should go on a date with you?" which is a no no for almost a quarter of daters.
The right amount of chat is also important when trying to attract a potential mate with three quarters (76%) admitting they have lost interest in someone who messaged TOO much.
If you're planning to ask someone to meet up try to do so in 10 messages or less as this is the maximum number that daters will tolerate before cutting someone loose.
Meanwhile six in ten (59%) have been happily messaging away only for the match to cut contact entirely without any explanation. On average UK daters have felt the sting of being ghosted seven times.
But it’s not love at first sight meeting someone face-to-face either, with over half (53%) declaring that after spending weeks flirting with a match, when they eventually met them, they didn’t fancy them AT ALL.
It’s no surprise, therefore that two thirds (63%) wish there was a way to avoid all the messaging and go straight to a meet up.
Commenting on the findings Marco van der Woude, co-founder at Breeze says: “It’s clear from the research that first impressions are so important and so many people waste this on an awful opening messaging on a dating app which ends the spark before its even started.
"At Breeze, we’re humanising the experience by removing the chat function and instead encouraging in-person meet ups. 38 hours are wasted in securing one date, and we’re here to change that. Allowing daters to connect in real time at one of our bar partners to make more genuine connections in safe environments.”
