This $23.3 Million Contemporary L.A. Home Is Concealed in a Forest-Like Setting

In Los Angeles, privacy is paramount, and the Riviera neighborhood in Pacific Palisades is sought after for its ample parcels, easy access to nature and absolute seclusion. One of the latest homes to come to market in the north-of-Sunset-Boulevard enclave is a newly constructed $23.3 million residence that steps down a steep hillside in a forest-like setting with towering trees that shield you from neighbors and manicured gardens that flank the winding pathways.

Behind private gates on half an acre that was once part of an estate owned by Hollywood actor and filmmaker Douglas Fairbanks, Jr., the home is set across several levels tiered vertically along the hillside and combines a relaxed California style with state-of-the-art architecture and expert craftsmanship. The base structure dates to the early 1970s but was recently reimagined and rebuilt by the D.I. Group, a Beverly Hills-based design firm whose founders are from Italy. The firm meticulously crafted the interiors in a warm contemporary style that celebrates the surrounding landscape through huge expanses of glass and the incorporation of organic materials.

The living room spills onto an ocean-view terrace.

The home’s muted tones and interior greenery create a rustic-meets-modern vibe that wouldn’t look out of place in Tulum. Altogether there are six bedrooms and six bathrooms, plus two more half-bathrooms. The heart of the home is the spacious great room, which houses the living room, dining area, and chef’s kitchen. Foldaway double-paneled glass walls open directly to a large terrace with canyon-framed direct ocean views, while the kitchen was designed for those who love to cook and features top-of-the-line appliances, hyper-filtered still and sparkling water, and hand-poured surfaces made of Chukum, an ancient stucco technique popular in Mexico and prized for its durability.

Upstairs, the primary suite is its own sanctuary with a floor-to-ceiling stone fireplace, numerous skylights, a private terrace, and a bathroom featuring backlit circular mirrors. A few of the secondary bedrooms have private terraces, and each has a different layout and feel. Other rooms include a study, a media room, a bar, an art studio, and a den.

Elsewhere across the property are a guest casita, a plunge pool, and a micro-vineyard with an outdoor wine tasting room.

Shamon Shamonki of Sotheby’s International Realty—Brentwood holds the listing.
