2023 was a great year for celebrity fashion. We saw perhaps the most committed press tour wardrobe of all time; there was more glamour than ever at the big film festivals; we were treated to plenty of striking vintage moments; and the daring dresses continued to come down the red carpet.

From Margot Robbie in Vivienne Westwood and Isabelle Huppert in Balenciaga to Zendaya in Valentino and Rihanna in Alaïa, some of these looks will go down in the history books.

Below, we round up our 10 favourite red-carpet moments of 2023.

Margot Robbie in Vivienne Westwood at the London premiere of 'Barbie'

Margot Robbie's Barbie tour wardrobe was nothing short of spectacular. The actress and her stylist, Andrew Mukamal, recreated a number of iconic ensembles from Barbie's history, and our favourite had to be this look for the European Barbie premiere held in London (her last before the strikes began and cut the tour short). Robbie wore a custom couture gown by Vivienne Westwood, which was modelled on the 'Enchanted Evening' doll from 1990. The corseted dress featured a draped side train, crafted in blush-pink satin and embroidered white tulle, and was accessorised with ivory opera gloves, a pearl choker and a rose brooch.

Isabelle Huppert in Balenciaga at the Venice Film Festival

The Venice Film Festival is fast becoming one of the most glamorous events on the celebrity calendar – and this year's event saw Isabelle Huppert execute one of our favourite red-carpet moments of the year. The French actress caught our eye in this silver fringed design by Balenciaga; we particularly loved the oversized shoulder pads and high neckline that further enhanced the drama of the look.

Nicole Kidman in vintage Chanel at the Met Gala

This year's Met Gala was a tribute to Karl Lagerfeld, and our favourite moment of the night came from Nicole Kidman, who tapped into vintage in the very best way. The actress ascended the famous steps wearing the Chanel couture gown that she had first worn in 2004 when she starred in that iconic Chanel No. 5 fragrance advert directed by Baz Luhrmann.

Michelle Yeoh in Schiaparelli at the SAGs

It was a great awards season for Michelle Yeoh, and not just because she went home with so many accolades. The actress really came into her own with her red-carpet style, our favourite look of which was at the SAG Awards, where she chose this avant-garde gown from Schiaparelli's much talked-about spring couture collection. It featured a dramatic textured panel down the front crafted from yellow sequin fringing.

Zendaya in Valentino at the SAGs

Zendaya had a quieter year on the red carpet in 2023, but when she did step out, she always delivered. For the SAG Awards, the actress wore this ladylike pink couture ballgown by Valentino, which was complete with three-dimensional floral detail, and plenty of jewels. It was Old Hollywood perfection, with decidedly modern flair.

Rihanna in Alaïa at the Oscars

It has been a very good year for Alaïa on the red carpet; the brand was worn by a number of big names for the most prestigious of occasions. Case in point? Rihanna at the Oscars. The singer – who was performing at the event – chose a partly sheer, partly leather gown by the house, which perfectly showed off her pregnancy bump.

Hunter Schafer in Ann Demeulemeester at the Oscars' afterparty

Sometimes, the fashion at the Oscars' afterparties is even more memorable than what we see on the Academy Awards red carpet, and this was certainly the case with Hunter Schafer's striking Ann Demeulemeester ensemble, which consisted of a low-rise white silk skirt with a single, very carefully placed, feather. Daring and divisive, yes, but certainly not dull.

Elle Fanning in Alexander McQueen at the Cannes Film Festival

The Cannes Film Festival is always a highlight on the red-carpet calendar, and this year, there was plenty of glamour. Our favourite look? This beautiful Alexander McQueen gown that Elle Fanning wore, which was made for walking up those dramatic Croisette steps. The dress featured a structured, embellished bodice and an enormous tulle skirt, while she wore her hair in a chic ballerina bun for extra polish.

The Princess of Wales in Alexander McQueen at the Coronation

No, not technically a red-carpet moment, but the coronation fashion certainly deserves a mention. The Princess of Wales looked resplendent in her bespoke Alexander McQueen gown, which she wore with a custom Jess Collett tiara (which matched Princess Charlotte's). The gown was covered with silver bullion and threadwork embroidery featuring rose, thistle, daffodil and shamrock motifs (to signify the four nations), with the Royal Victorian Order Mantle.

Kaia Gerber in Celine at the Academy Museum Gala

One of the final events of 2023 was the Academy Museum Gala, and it was probably the best-dressed red carpet we'd seen all year – it certainly got us excited about the 2024 awards season. One of our favourite looks of the night came from Kaia Gerber, who wore a strapless polka-dot Celine ballgown, which was perfectly complemented by her voluminous blowdry.
