Zendaya is nominated for Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy for her role as Tashi in the summer hit Challengers. She last attended the ceremony in January 2016, making this a big return for her.
In summer 2023, she spoke to ELLE about her role in the project, saying that even after wrapping Challengers, 'I still don’t understand the decisions she makes, and we had so many conversations about why she is that way. What was important to me was that she was unapologetic. Sometimes characters who are messy and conflicted and wield power over other people are reserved for [actors] who don’t look like me, so when I get an opportunity to play a character like that, I’ma take it!'
This past September, she spoke a little about why she dresses to stand out on red carpets. The fashion acts as 'armour,' she said, which helps her navigate the attention more easily.
'I feel like, often, I am not cut out for [the fame] part of [my work],' she said during a Dune: Part Two talk. 'I do love my job; I’m so grateful. I love doing the work, I love being on set, I do love moments like this—don’t get me wrong—but I am terrified of that part of it, often.'
She added that 'I was a shy kid, always have been, and so this part isn’t natural—that is a huge reason why fashion became important to me because it became like armour to pretend to go out and do the job.'
