Finding the perfect Valentine's Day gift for a loved one can feel easy in comparison to writing a heartfelt message in the all-important Valentine's Day card. After all, a handwritten note adds a personal touch that can be kept for years to come.

So how do you really show appreciation for your partner or friend? Is it best to go down the funny and cute route or is a lengthy expression of feelings more romantic?

The most useful thing to consider here is the relationship you have with the person. Who you are writing the card for? Whether it's a boyfriend or girlfriend, husband or wife or a cherished friend, the type of note you write will vary depending on the recipient.

It's also helpful to think about how you would usually communicate with your loved one. If you normally celebrate anniversaries or milestones with long, profound messages, then it will feel more appropriate to do the same at Valentine's Day. If it's a new relationship, it might feel safer to stick to a short and sweet note that gets to the point.
