One woman is refusing to let her sister take her same wedding dress down the aisle.

The 27-year-old woman, who got married three years ago, shared in a post on Reddit’s popular "Am I The A------" forum that her 24-year-old sister recently asked her whether she could “wear” her wedding dress for her big day.

She noted that the dress had been “custom-made” and she “fell in love with it” the moment she “saw the final version.” She added, “it’s one of those things I still look at and feel proud of—it holds so many special memories for me.”

The woman also noted that she and her sister “have always been close” but have “different tastes in almost everything” so she was “caught off guard” by the request. Ultimately she said she turned her sister down.

She noted that she also shared that she would “help her find a dress that suited her style” or “contribute to the cost” of a new dress. However, her sister “didn’t take it well.”

“She got upset, saying I was being selfish and that since I’m already married, it shouldn’t matter to me anymore,” the woman shared. “She mentioned that since she’s on a tight budget, wearing my dress would help her save a lot of money.”

“I felt terrible, but I stood my ground and told her I wasn’t willing to give it up,” she added.

The Redditor said that since she refused to lend her wedding dress to her sister “she’s been cold towards me” and even got their mom to give her opinion on the issue. She said that her mom sided with her sister and thought that she was “being unreasonable.”

“She says that I could lend her the dress just for one day and that it wouldn’t hurt me to share it with family,” the woman said. “I don’t know if I’m being overly attached or if my feelings are valid here. I’ve tried explaining my side, but they don’t seem to get it.”

Several people noted that she was not being unreasonable for not wanting to share her wedding dress with her sister. One person commented, “if you bought it with your own money, you get to do with it whatever you want.”

“Your sister and mom are being entitled and selfish to expect a grown adult to hand over something she bought for herself with her own money,” they continued, adding, “And as for the ‘you will never wear it again’ argument’... You could wear it again to renew your vows…”

Another said, “it's up to your sister and partner to budget in order to get a wedding dress. You have no obligation to help, especially since the dress is meaningful to you, she is being really unreasonable.”

A second person agreed, noting that it was “rude” for the woman’s sister to ask in the first place. That’s your wedding dress and [holds your] special memories. If moneys tight then she shouldn’t get married yet until she has saved enough to.”
