Gavin and Stacey star James Corden has opened up on how "hard" marriage is after tying the knot with wife Julia Carey 12 years ago.

The English actor shares three children with his wife, whom he married in 2012 after three years of dating. The former Late, Late star gave fans a rare glimpse behind the curtain into his own homelife during a previous interview with Prime Video.

Discussing his experience of marriage, James stressed how important it was to be "evolving" with his partner, but stressed that the relationship hasn't always been easy.

He said: "It’s funny with marriage—no one ever really talks about just how f***ing hard it is sometimes. Like, the sacrifice that you and your partner have to make.

"What you’re both trying to do is grow together, knowing that you’re never staying the same. You’re constantly evolving.

"And if you’re not evolving, then you might as well be dead: you have to be moving and evolving at the same time as someone else.”

James was introduced to Julia by his friend and The History Boys co-star Dominic Cooper. The 46-year-old previously quit the UK for Hollywood when he was offered the chance to host The Late, Late show in 2013.

However, the Fat Friends star announced in 2022 he would be quitting the show the following year for family reasons, according to the New York Post.

He said: "My son was 3 when we moved [to America], my daughter was 12 weeks. When we left, he was 12, my daughter was 8, and our younger daughter — who is an American, and we treat her as such…No, really for us, it was the notion that it was time.

"We wanted them to know their grandparents. And with my son finishing 6th grade, it was just an absolute pull to go home, and root that period of their lives in — we wanted them to know Britain, and their extended family.”

Back in December 2022, in an interview with The Morning Show, James opened up about quitting The Late Late Show, saying: “The reason to leave is we're a long way from home in Los Angeles. And there [are] people at home that are getting older, and we want our kids to know them and be around them.”

James and TV producer wife Julia now have a home in Belsize Park, north London, with son Max, 12, and daughters Carey, 9, and Charlotte, 7.

Gavin and Stacey: The Finale will air at 9pm on Christmas Day on BBC One.
