Just like a new hairdo, women get a self-esteem from getting a tattoo done a study has revealed. Not all that surprising as you need to be a fairly confident person to get a design, word or phrase inked on you permanently.

But what is interesting, is that a woman’s self-esteem levels go up with every individual tat they get.

The Tattoos, Gender And Well-Being Among American College Students study researched 2,395 students from six different universities in the States. Women with four or more tattoos were found to have higher self-esteem levels than those with less or none at all, which the researchers think could be down to body art helping a person identify with themselves.

“'We wanted to find out, to what extent does the acquisition of body art correlate to a sense of well-being or a greater sense of self?” Jermone Koch, the study’s lead researcher told Science Daily.

But before you jump up and book an appointment with your local tattoo artist, you should know that the study had some negative revelations, too. While self-confidence levels increased with each tattoo, so bizarrely did depression levels. In particular, the rate of suicide attempts in women with at least four tattoos was four times higher than that of women with no tattoos.

This could be down to the fact that women use tattoos to heal the emotional wounds and bring meaning to life after a traumatic event.

“Just as breast cancer survivors and abuse victims acquire tattoos and piercings to restore physical losses… we think the women in our study may be trying to restore emotional losses with more tattoos,” says Koch.

This would explain why so many women get body art of a lost loved one’s name or date of birth and why some people opt to have their mastectomy scars covered with tattoos.
