We’ve Been Brushing Our Teeth Wrong The Whole Time

Do you remember learning how to brush your teeth? Chances are it happened before your memories began and that you’ve brushed, flossed and mouthwashed in the same way since.

And that way is totally wrong, apparently. Dental hygienists told Marie Claire that elements of most people’s oral hygiene routines aren’t what’s best for our teeth and gums.

The first thing we’re doing wrong is the order of our dental routine. We often brush, floss, then gargle - but it should actually be another way around: floss first, then gargle, then brush your teeth last. If you think about it, it makes sense - flossing removes the debris, mouthwash washes it away, then brushing finishes off the job.

Next is the fact that most of us brush straight after breakfast - another big mistake.

Apparently, this is the worst time we could be doing it as food causes acid build up in the mouth which softens our enamel. By brushing teeth while they’re in this state we’re actually brushing away the soft enamel.

And finally, do you rinse your toothbrush before using it? Yep, we thought so. Apparently this is another no-no - starting with the brush dry actually helps to remove plaque.

To think that we’ve been doing something so wrong for so many years. What will be next?
